Frights, Lights, and City Nights: Where to Celebrate Halloween 2025 in Joburg

Halloween in the City of Gold: Where Frights Meet Fun
Johannesburg loves a reason to dress up, and Halloween is no exception. Every October, the city transforms into a playground of eerie forests, costume parties and family-friendly adventures. Whether you’re looking for a bone-chilling night out or a light-hearted trick-or-treat with the kids, Joburg’s 2025 Halloween lineup has something for every ghost and ghoul.
1. The Haunted Forest: Midrand’s Fright Night Spectacle
Hidden among the trees of Inanda Country Base in Midrand, The Haunted Forest® returns for another spine-tingling year. Visitors wander through misty pathways filled with creepy scenes, strange sounds and costumed scare actors lurking behind every turn.
For younger trick-or-treaters, there’s a special Trick & Treat Trail before the main forest walk begins. The event also includes a food and drink village, a picnic zone, and a festival area with a massive outdoor screen showing classic horror films.
If you’re brave enough, add the Haunted House tour or a stop at the Hansel & Gretel House for extra chills. Prizes are up for grabs for the Most Horrific Family and Freakiest Couple.
When: Saturday, 25 October 2025, 6 pm to 11.30 pm
Where: Inanda Country Base, Midrand
2. Knit-In Cinema at The Bioscope
Not all Halloween events are about jump scares. At The Bioscope in 44 Stanley, crafters can enjoy the 1998 classic Practical Magic while knitting, crocheting or sewing. The lights stay on for this one, so you can work on your own project or contribute to a community blanket drive for The Baby Box Project, helping mothers in underprivileged communities.
It’s cosy, creative, and a gentle way to mark Halloween with purpose and popcorn.
When: Sunday, 26 October 2025, from 2 pm
Where: The Bioscope, Braamfontein Werf
3. Secret Sunrise Halloween Sunset Dance
At Bryanston Market, Joburg’s iconic Secret Sunrise team is turning Halloween into a dance floor under the sky. Slip on wireless headphones and follow live facilitators through a mix of movement, music and mindfulness.
Costumes are encouraged, energy is contagious, and there are treats for the most “spooktacular” dancer. It’s the perfect way to end the day before the real ghosts come out.
When: Friday, 31 October 2025, 6 pm to 7 pm
Where: Bryanston Market, Sandton
4. Halloween at Joburg Zoo
The Johannesburg Zoo opens after hours for families to explore themed trails and decorated zones. Children can trick-or-treat between stations, enjoy live entertainment, and experience the zoo in a completely different light, literally, under the stars.
It’s a safe, wholesome event where parents can relax while kids burn off their sugar rushes.
When: Friday, 31 October 2025, 5 pm to 9 pm
Where: Johannesburg Zoo, Parkview
5. Prime: Halloween Edition
