Almond Blossom Festival Blooms in Joburg This August

Joburg South is getting ready to welcome spring with one of the city’s most picturesque countryside events. The Almond Blossom Festival returns to The Field Berry Farm in Walkerville for its third year, running for just two weekends: 23 to 24 August and 30 to 31 August 2025.
This family-friendly festival has become a seasonal highlight, drawing visitors who want to swap the city buzz for a slower pace among blossoms, art, and fresh air.
A fleeting countryside wonder
The story of the Almond Blossom Festival began in 2020, when the farm planted its very first almond trees. Now, over 1,000 young trees line the fields, and every August they bloom for just two weeks. The orchards transform into a breathtaking display of soft pink and white petals, creating a fleeting but unforgettable scene.
The brief blossom season is what makes the festival so special. Much like Japan’s celebrated cherry blossom tradition, this moment reminds Joburgers to pause and enjoy the simple beauty of nature before it disappears.
Trails, poetry, and origami
At the centre of the festival is a 1.5 km self-guided blossom trail. Along the way, guests encounter stations inspired by Japanese culture, where poetry is displayed and origami stations encourage visitors to fold their own piece to take home. The gentle walk takes about 30 minutes and is suitable for all ages, though comfortable shoes are advised for the uneven ground.
For those who want to stretch their legs a little more, a brand-new 5 km farm trail invites birdwatchers and nature lovers to explore further, with scenic views across Walkerville’s countryside.
Food, flavours, and sunset picnics
Festivals are as much about taste as they are about sights, and here you’ll find Japanese-inspired street food alongside fresh farm produce. Think flavourful bites designed for wandering, as well as produce that reflects the farm’s roots.
The Sunset Picnic experience, which must be pre-booked, allows guests to enjoy the blossoms in the golden light of late afternoon, creating the perfect backdrop for a relaxed and romantic outing.
