A cosy weekend of food, wine, and fireside cheer comes to Muldersdrift this June

As Joburg settles into its chilly season, there’s no better time to gather with friends over good food and even better wine. Enter The Winter Feast – a limited-run experience pairing Babylonstoren’s award-winning wines with a decadent three-course menu at Ground the Venue in Muldersdrift. It’s happening from 6 to 8 June 2025, and it promises to be the highlight of Joburg’s winter calendar.

Taste Franschhoek without the airfare

Babylonstoren is no stranger to accolades. Nestled in the heart of the Franschhoek wine valley, the farm is famous for its bold reds, refined whites, and the ancient-meets-modern way its wines are crafted – using everything from clay amphorae to concrete egg fermenters.

For three days only, the farm brings that magic north to Gauteng, with an expert-led wine tasting and a warming winter menu that pairs perfectly with the vineyard’s finest vintages. Think bold sips, crackling fires, and a setting that feels like the Winelands – but just 40 minutes from Sandton.

What’s on the menu? Comfort food, done exquisitely

The meal begins with a selection of wintery starters designed to be shared – pan-fried brie with sage, crispy gnocchi, and a luxurious truffle mushroom soup served with cheesy croutes.

For mains, diners can choose between slow-cooked harissa lamb shoulder (served with sautéed spinach, lemon, and labneh) or oven-baked chicken. There’s also a standout vegetarian option: butternut pasta tossed in a fiery arrabiata with generous parmesan.

Dessert ends things on a high note with a tiramisu-inspired chocolate brownie – rich, indulgent, and completely justified in winter.

Wine lovers, this one’s for you

A highlight of the event is the guided tasting led by a Babylonstoren wine expert or sommelier. Whether you’re already a fan of their Mourvèdre Rosé or just starting to explore wine, this relaxed and informative session gives guests a behind-the-scenes look at what makes the estate’s wines so distinct.

And yes, there’s plenty of time to simply sip and enjoy – no snobbery, just great wine and warm hospitality.

Venue vibes: rustic charm with a Joburg twist

Held inside The Tobacco Shed, one of the most character-filled spaces at Ground the Venue, the event combines countryside charm with elegant design. Exposed beams, soft lighting, and views of the surrounding Muldersdrift landscape make this a beautifully atmospheric escape from the city buzz.

It’s a space that’s become a favourite for weddings, weekend markets, and now – winter feasts.

Why it’s worth bundling up for

Winter in Joburg can feel a bit relentless. But between the blankets and the boiler repairs, there are moments like this – warm, flavourful, and worth getting out of the house for. The Winter Feast is more than a meal. It’s a celebration of local excellence, from Cape wines to Joburg hospitality.

So bring your appetite. Bring a jacket. And bring someone who loves wine as much as you do.
