Published

on

Hidden Giants Joburg Theatre returns this May with a brand-new experience that blends science, music, and storytelling into a powerful live performance. This updated version of the acclaimed show will run for two nights only, on Thursday, 8, and Friday, 9 May, at 19:30 at the Mandela Theatre, Joburg Theatre in Braamfontein.

The production is led by Wits alumni – physicist Dr. Luca Pontiggia and award-winning composer Yasheen Modi (Yash) – and is designed to take audiences on a journey through space, time, and imagination.

What Is Hidden Giants About?

At the heart of Hidden Giants Joburg Theatre is the astonishing true story of how scientists captured the first-ever image of a black hole – one of the universe’s most mysterious phenomena.

Rather than a traditional science talk, the show immerses the audience in an experience that combines:

  • Expert storytelling

  • Breathtaking cinematic visuals

  • Live musical performance

“This isn’t just a show; it’s a journey through our universe and our place in it,” says Dr Pontiggia. “It’s for curious minds of all ages.”

What’s New in 2025?

This year’s production takes things further than ever before, introducing three groundbreaking elements:

Immersive Audio by The Audioroom

Using state-of-the-art sound design, the show simulates the forces of space – including the gravitational pull of a black hole – to create an almost physical experience of deep space.

Live Violin by Siobhan Lloyd-Jones

Live music brings depth and emotion. Violinist Siobhan Lloyd-Jones performs throughout, adding dramatic and poetic layers to the story.

Updated Visuals by Darius Botha

New cinematic graphics by artist Darius Botha elevate the storytelling. Expect visuals that are rich, sharp, and deeply atmospheric.
