Move It to the People’s Theatre This Festive Season

This November, the Joburg Theatre is transforming into a jungle of music, laughter, and adventure as Madagascar: A Musical Adventure JR. swings into town. Based on the beloved DreamWorks animated film, the stage production invites Joburg families to “move it, move it” alongside Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra, Gloria the Hippo, Melman the Giraffe, and a mischievous crew of penguins in a show bursting with energy and heart.

From 7 November to 24 December 2025, the People’s Theatre will be home to this vibrant family musical, promising a spectacular holiday outing for kids and adults alike. Tickets are priced at R175, and every child over the age of one must have a booked seat.

From Central Park to Madagascar: A Musical Journey

The story follows the same lovable plot fans know from the movie. Alex, the king of New York’s Central Park Zoo, lives a pampered life with his best friends Marty, Melman, and Gloria. But Marty’s curiosity about the outside world leads to an unexpected adventure when he escapes the zoo with the help of a few crafty penguins.

Their great escape spirals into chaos, landing the group in the wilds of Madagascar, where they encounter the eccentric lemur King Julien and his “I like to move it” crew. Through catchy songs, clever humour, and heart-warming lessons about friendship and freedom, Madagascar JR. captures the same joyful spirit that made the film a global hit.

Perfect for the School Holidays

The People’s Theatre has long been a favourite for Joburg families looking for quality kids’ entertainment, and Madagascar JR. continues that tradition. With morning and afternoon performances scheduled throughout November and December, the show makes for an ideal school outing or weekend treat.

Parents can expect a lively mix of singing, dancing, and colourful costumes that keep even the littlest audience members captivated. And for many children, this will be their first taste of live theatre, a chance to see their favourite animated characters come to life right before their eyes.

Why It’s Worth the Trip

In a city buzzing with festive events, Madagascar JR. stands out as a production that brings families together through nostalgia, creativity, and community spirit. It’s not just about revisiting a childhood classic; it’s about seeing it reimagined through South African talent, with the same humour and heart that made the original so unforgettable.

So, if you’re ready to escape the city jungle for a few hours of pure fun, grab your tickets early; this one’s bound to sell out fast.
