Mandela Day is more than a calendar date. In Johannesburg this year, it is a shared call to action, and thousands are expected to answer it at the Joburg Expo Centre.

On 18 July 2025, Joburg residents, companies, schools, and families will gather at Hall 10 of the Expo Centre for the FoodForward SA Mandela Day Packing Event. It is one of the country’s most hands-on ways to honour Madiba’s legacy: by giving 67 minutes of your time to pack food for those who need it most.

It costs just R67 to participate, and every box you help pack contributes directly to FoodForward SA’s mission of tackling hunger through sustainable food redistribution.

A National Movement with a Local Beat

This initiative stretches across three major cities, Joburg, Cape Town, and Durban, but here in Gauteng, the turnout is always massive. As the economic heart of South Africa, Johannesburg plays a special role in this national movement.

The day brings together corporates, clubs, schools, and everyday citizens to sort and pack essential grocery items, think meal packs, canned food, and staples, for immediate delivery to communities in need. It is a high-energy, music-filled event that feels more like a social cause festival than a food drive.

What to Expect in Hall 10

  • Start time: 09:30 on Thursday, 18 July

  • Location: Expo Centre Johannesburg, Hall 10

  • Duration: 67 minutes (or longer, if you want to stay and help more)

  • Cost: R67 per volunteer

  • Booking: Webtickets

You’ll join a fast-moving line of volunteers packing and sorting non-perishable food items. There will be music, community spirit, team bonding, and loads of feel-good energy. Whether you’re a group of twenty or a solo volunteer, your presence makes a real impact.

Why It’s Trending This Year

In 2025, Mandela Day has recaptured attention on social media. TikTok and Instagram are filled with pledges, memories, and volunteer call-outs, many from Jozi’s schools, fitness groups, and young professionals. Influencers and local creators are already hyping up the vibe, with one user calling it “the most energising hour of the year.”

And for brands, it has become a must-do event on the corporate CSI calendar. You’ll spot team shirts, branded boxes, and even competitive packing races between departments.

It Doesn’t End After 67 Minutes

FoodForward SA’s work continues long after Mandela Day. They operate national food hubs that collect surplus food from manufacturers, farmers, and retailers. That food is then distributed to over 2,500 vetted non-profits, including shelters, soup kitchens, and community centres.

If you’re inspired, you can support year-round by becoming a monthly donor at foodforwardsa.org/donate.

Mandela Day is about action, not words. And in 2025, the people of Johannesburg are proving again that when it comes to standing together, they never hesitate.

Come alone or bring your crew; just bring your heart, your hands, and 67 minutes of your time.
