A toast to Joburg: WineX is back

There’s a fresh buzz in Johannesburg’s wine scene this year. From 29 to 31 October 2025, Sandton Convention Centre transforms into a playground for wine lovers as Standard Bank WineX returns for its annual three-night spectacle. Whether you’re new to wine or a seasoned collector, this is your chance to swirl, sip, and socialise with the best of South Africa’s vintages lining up under one roof.

This is not just a tasting event. It’s a chance to meet winemakers, try rare label drops, and be part of a community that grows richer with every glass.

What’s pouring: from the classics to hidden gems

This year’s WineX brings together more than 120 exhibitors, pouring over 700 wines, champagnes, Cap Classiques, and pot-still brandies. You’ll find heavy hitters like Boschendal, Graham Beck, Spier, De Grendel, Durbanville Hills, JC Le Roux, Cederberg, and boutique newcomers making their mark.

Expect variety at every corner: crisp whites to bold reds, sparkling classics, small-batch offerings, and limited-release bottles that rarely make public appearances.

More than just tasting, immersive experiences

WineX 2025 doesn’t stop at free pours. Head to the Tasting Theatre, where you can sign up for half-hour guided sessions with winemakers themselves. These are perfect for diving deeper; think grape varieties, terroir stories, and cellar secrets.

Also worth exploring is the Shop@Show portal by Norman Goodfellows. Grab bottles you love on the spot and have them delivered to your door by 11 November. Spend R2,500 or more during the show and you’ll receive a pair of Riedel glasses worth around R500 as a bonus.

Stomach rumbling between sips? The Deli Counter is ready. Expect artisan cheese, olives, meats, and decadent Ghanaian chocolates, small bites that sharpen your palate without spoiling the wine.

Tickets, timing, and insider tips

  • The show runs from 17h00 to 21h00 nightly. First entry must be before 20h30.

  • Wednesday, 29 October, is invitation-only, reserved for Standard Bank clients and special guests.

  • Through Webtickets, general tickets cost between R182 and R375, depending on the day and timing.

  • Early bird rates run until 19 October, with lower rates for Thursday and Friday tickets.

  • Standard Bank clients enjoy up to a 30% discount, limited to four tickets per transaction.

Smart tip: Arrive early to catch limited tasting slots in the theatre and to explore quieter exhibitor booths before the crowds roll in.

Why WineX matters: a fresh lens

Wine culture in South Africa is often associated with the Cape and its scenic routes. WineX brings that heritage to Johannesburg and reaffirms that wine lovers live all over this country. Over the years, WineX has evolved beyond a tasting floor into a social gathering, part art show, part live event, and part networking space.

For many Gauteng wine fans, this is their chance to connect with vintages they might never see locally. For newcomers, it’s an invitation into a welcoming community. And for those who’ve been before, it’s tradition: a three-night date with discovery, conversations, and bottles that linger outside the glass.

What to bring and how to get the most out of it

  • Bring cash or cards for the Shop@Show portal and exhibitor sales.

  • Wear comfortable shoes; this is a walk-and-sip event.

  • Pace yourself: water and snacks between tastings help reset your palate.

  • Use public transport or a rideshare for safer logistics, especially as nights deepen.

  • Follow @SBWineX on Instagram or Facebook for last-minute updates and sneak peeks.

Standard Bank WineX 2025 promises more than wine; it’s an experience drawn from South Africa’s cellar soul and poured into the heart of Joburg. Three nights to sip, learn, share, and celebrate. Whether you’re hunting for a new favourite vino or eager to mingle among cult label fans, WineX invites you in. Be there when Gauteng becomes the wine heart of the country.
