LEGO F1: Build the Thrill Brings High Speed Winter Fun to Sandton City

Get ready to shift gears, Joburg, Sandton City is transforming into a high speed playground this winter, and it’s powered by LEGO bricks and Formula 1 fever.
If you’re looking for something that blends adrenaline and creativity for the kids these holidays, Sandton City has officially fired the starting gun. The LEGO F1: Build The Thrill pop-up event has landed in the centre court and will be racing through town until 6 August.
Build It. Race It. Win It.
This isn’t your average LEGO showcase. From 5 July, the centre court has been buzzing with activity as kids (and some very enthusiastic grown-ups) dive into the world of Formula 1 through hands-on LEGO play. Visitors can build their own race cars, test them in timed challenges, and even compete for a spot on the event leaderboard.
Winners get exclusive prizes, but let’s be honest — it’s the bragging rights that matter most.
The activation zone has been designed for full-throttle fun: fast-paced races, interactive building zones and the latest LEGO F1 sets on display. It’s the kind of space where imagination takes pole position and creativity gets to put the pedal to the metal.
Social media has already started revving up, with Joburg parents and influencers posting snippets of car builds, finish-line celebrations and little racers in action. TikTok is flooded with #BuildTheThrill clips, and LEGO lovers across the city are calling it one of the best indoor pop-ups of the season.
More Ways to Keep the Fun Going
Once you’ve built your speed machine and raced it to glory, there’s still loads to explore across Sandton City’s retail wonderland.
-
Hamleys offers train rides for tiny travellers, plus the Zuru Xshot shooting range and an old-school carousel.
-
Toy Kingdom remains a favourite for toy shopping sprees, while Build-A-Bear lets little ones craft a custom cuddly friend.
-
For gamers, BT Games and South Africa’s only standalone Nintendo store are must-visits for the latest titles, gear and collectables.
-
And when it’s time to slow things down, Ster-Kinekor’s kids’ cinema is screening winter hits like Smurfs, How to Train Your Dragon, Lilo & Stitch, and Jungle Beat 2, all in a bean bag and ball pit-filled theatre perfect for younger audiences.
Something for Everyone
Whether your child is a budding F1 engineer, a future gaming champ or just loves getting creative, Sandton City has made sure there’s something to keep every young mind engaged this winter.
So, if you’re in Joburg and looking to escape the chill while still bringing the heat, the LEGO F1: Build the Thrill pop-up should be at the top of your family’s holiday hit list.
Start your engines. The race is on until 6 August.
