New Direct Cape Town to Mauritius Flights: SAA’s Strategic Move to Expand Regional Connectivity

South African Airways (SAA) is soaring to new heights with an exciting announcement that promises to boost both tourism and business travel between South Africa and Mauritius. Set to launch in December 2025, SAA will operate its first-ever direct flight between Cape Town and the Indian Ocean island, providing much-needed connectivity for travelers from the Western Cape.
A Milestone for Cape Town
Starting on 9 December 2025, SAA will operate a three-times-weekly service on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, making the dream of visiting Mauritius even more accessible for South Africans. With two convenient flight times, the outbound flight departs Cape Town at 09h25 and arrives in Mauritius at 16h30. The return flight will leave Mauritius at 17h20, landing back in Cape Town at 21h30. Each leg of the journey is expected to take about five hours, giving passengers plenty of time to soak in the stunning island views upon arrival.
Seasonal Adjustments and Growing Demand
In response to seasonal demand, the service will be adjusted between mid-January and mid-March 2026, operating twice a week instead of three. This flexibility ensures that the flight schedule aligns with the varying number of travelers during the summer and off-peak seasons.
SAA’s decision to launch this route comes as part of its larger strategy to expand its network and increase its footprint in the tourism sector. “Connecting Cape Town with Mauritius is a fascinating achievement that our team has been aspiring towards for quite some time,” said a spokesperson from SAA. The new flights are designed to meet the growing demand for leisure travel, which is crucial to the economies of both South Africa and Mauritius.
Boosting Regional Tourism and Connectivity
The new Cape Town-Mauritius route is the latest in a string of new services opening up across South Africa. It not only expands SAA’s reach but also complements a growing trend of increased flight options between South Africa and key international destinations.
In addition to SAA’s announcement, FlySafair, a prominent low-cost carrier, will launch a new domestic route connecting Cape Town to Hoedspruit in Limpopo, enhancing access to the popular Kruger National Park region. Starting in October 2025, this flight will operate three times a week, further cementing South Africa’s position as a top destination for both local and international travelers.
Expanding the Skies: More International Flights to South Africa
The air travel landscape in South Africa is witnessing even more exciting developments. Qantas will be reintroducing its direct route between Johannesburg and Perth in December 2025, offering South Africans more ways to explore Australia and beyond. The new service will offer easy connections to Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and even Auckland in New Zealand.
Furthermore, Air France is bringing back its popular seasonal direct flight between Cape Town and Paris, just in time for the summer season. From 15 December 2025 to 12 January 2026, daily nonstop flights will operate, providing up to 18 weekly flights between Cape Town and Europe. With KLM Royal Dutch Airlines also part of the Air France-KLM network, the airline group will offer 32 flights per week to South Africa, opening over 11,000 seats each week for international passengers.
Cultural and Social Reactions
Locals and tourists alike are buzzing about the new opportunities that these flights represent. For South African travelers, the new route to Mauritius offers a convenient and affordable way to explore the island’s pristine beaches and rich culture. On social media, many have praised SAA for improving accessibility to Mauritius, with some calling it a game-changer for the Western Cape tourism industry.
The positive reactions extend to Mauritius, where the new flight is expected to boost its tourism industry as well. With both countries relying heavily on tourism to drive their economies, the introduction of more flight options is a welcome development for travel enthusiasts across the region.
The Bigger Picture: Strengthening Africa’s Connectivity
As Africa continues to grow as a global tourist destination, these new flight routes reflect an important step in strengthening regional connectivity. South Africa is increasingly becoming a hub for international travelers, with improved access to key markets like Europe, Asia, and Oceania. These new routes will not only support tourism but also enhance trade and business relationships across the globe.
