A violent late-afternoon storm swept through Ekurhuleni on Monday, leaving a trail of destruction in Kwanele Extension 2, Katlehong. Residents watched in shock as roofs were ripped from homes and walls collapsed, with at least one person injured.
According to Tikkie MacDonald of the City’s Emergency Medical Services and Disaster Management, emergency services were inundated with calls at around 4:38pm. “Callers reported that numerous house roofs had been blown off and several walls had collapsed,” MacDonald said. Firefighters and rescue crews were quickly dispatched to the hardest-hit areas.
Emergency teams identified at least 11 households with significant structural damage. An elderly woman suffered minor injuries but was treated on-site and is now stable. Thankfully, no other injuries or fatalities have been reported.
Disaster Management teams are currently conducting a full assessment, and officials warn that the number of affected households could rise as damage reports continue to come in. Relief efforts are underway, focusing on providing temporary shelter and essential supplies to displaced families. MacDonald urged residents to report further damage immediately and remain cautious. For emergencies, the City’s Life-Threatening line is available at (011) 458-0911.
The South African Weather Service has issued warnings that Tuesday could bring intense downpours, with flooding expected across multiple provinces. A yellow level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms has been issued for parts of Mpumalanga and northern KwaZulu-Natal, while the Northern and Western Cape brace for hot and humid conditions.
Residents are being reminded that the weather remains unpredictable, and the city is closely monitoring the situation to ensure rapid response. Social media has seen a surge of photos from Kwanele residents showing overturned roofing and water-damaged interiors, highlighting the storm’s sudden and destructive impact.
The storm is a stark reminder of how quickly severe weather can disrupt daily life and the importance of preparedness, particularly in the face of increasingly unpredictable climate patterns.
