The Madlanga Commission, already navigating tense and closely watched testimony, was forced to halt another crucial session after a Crime Intelligence officer called in sick just hours before he was due to take the stand. While delays happen in any inquiry, commissioners say this one reflects a trend that is becoming harder to ignore.

A Sudden Illness And A Growing Pattern

The officer had been scheduled to testify on Thursday, but his legal team informed the commission of his sudden illness. What would normally be a routine postponement has sparked frustration, as several witnesses in recent weeks have withdrawn on medical grounds.

Co-commissioner Sesi Baloyi said the commission can no longer overlook the wave of medical-related absences. Evidence leader Mathew Chaskalson SC raised similar concerns on Tuesday when he questioned whether another witness’s medical certificate was even adequate.

Stricter Measures Being Considered

In response to the rising number of medical no-shows, the commission is considering tougher measures. One proposal involves compelling doctors who issue sick notes for scheduled witnesses to appear before the commission and explain their decisions.

The law firm representing the latest absent witness, Matlala Attorneys, has now been directed to submit a valid medical certificate by Thursday. If the certificate falls short, commissioners indicated that the issuing doctor could be subpoenaed.

Why This Matters Now

This postponement comes at a sensitive moment. The inquiry is probing allegations that politicians, senior officers and individuals linked to criminal cartels may have infiltrated the SAPS and even elements of the judiciary.

The Crime Intelligence officer who was due to testify was expected to provide important context in a case already filled with serious claims. The commission has not disclosed the nature of the illness or confirmed whether the officer will be rescheduled.

Tensions High After Sibiya’s Testimony

The delay lands just after intense testimony from suspended SAPS deputy national commissioner Lt-Gen Shadrack Sibiya. His appearance drew attention when he confirmed knowing alleged cartel figure Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and acknowledged inviting him to a family gathering. He firmly denied allegations of corruption and rejected claims that he authorised the circulation of sensitive internal documents, including a warrant involving blogger Musa Khawula.

Momentum was building for the week’s testimony, making the officer’s absence all the more disruptive.

What Happens Next

The commission will hear the formal postponement application at 10am, while another witness is expected to take the stand on Thursday.

For a process trying to uncover potential criminal and political infiltration of state systems, each delay adds pressure. With talk of stricter oversight for medical certificates, the commission appears ready to tighten its procedures to keep the inquiry on track.
