Neck Injury Ends Lions Star Ruhan Straeuli’s Career Early

Lions loose forward Ruhan Straeuli has been forced to retire from professional rugby at just 26, following a serious neck injury that ended his career earlier than expected. The flanker, who made 47 appearances for the Johannesburg-based team, announced his decision in a heartfelt statement released by the Lions.

“Unfortunately, the playing chapter of my rugby career has ended sooner than expected,” Straeuli said. “It’s been a privilege to give my all for this city, and I’m thankful to everyone who supported me throughout.”

Straeuli sustained a neck injury earlier this year that required surgery in March. Despite his recovery efforts, medical advice led him to step away from the game permanently.

The former Stellenbosch and schoolboy rugby standout joined the Lions in 2020 and quickly earned respect for his physicality and work rate. He was part of the squad that played in the Pro14 Rainbow Cup SA and was later included in the 2021 Currie Cup Premier Division lineup.

Son of 2007 Rugby World Cup winner Rudolf Straeuli, Ruhan impressed coaches with his relentless tackling, breakdown dominance, and leadership on the field. Before joining the Lions, he also represented the Bulls at under-18 Academy level.

His teammates and coaching staff praised his professionalism and positive influence in the locker room. “His contribution to both the Lions and Golden Lions was significant,” the club said. “His presence will be missed on and off the field.”
