Derick Hougaard: a Springbok test career measured in moments and numbers

Derick Hougaard left international rugby remembered for eye-catching scoring feats and what might have been. The fly-half born in Kuruman in 1983 finished his Springbok test career with two hat-tricks and was widely regarded as one of South Africa’s most exciting backs in the 2000s.

Hougaard scored three tries in a 52-16 win over the British and Irish Lions in 2009 and repeated the achievement the following year with a hat-trick against Scotland in 2010. Across the 2000s he was a prolific points scorer for club and country.

Early rise and domestic success

His top-level career accelerated after a standout season with the Blue Bulls in 2002. That same year he made his test debut for the Springboks against Wales. He also played for the Bulls in Super Rugby and won Currie Cup titles during his time in South Africa.
