Despite a spirited effort in front of nearly 15,000 fans, the Junior Springboks fell just short of victory in a thrilling U20 Rugby Championship final against New Zealand in Gqeberha. The South Africans lost 48-45 in a pulsating, high-scoring match that showcased their attacking flair and determination.

Head coach Kevin Foote praised his team’s performance and progress, saying the players showed immense character and could take key lessons from the narrow defeat as they prepare for the upcoming World Rugby U20 Championship in Italy.

“There’s a lot to be proud of,” said Foote after the match. “We’ve been working hard to build a strong foundation since I joined in November, and the guys are fully buying into our game model and principles.”

South Africa led 26-24 at halftime but couldn’t hold off the Kiwis, who finished the game with just 13 players under intense pressure. The action-packed contest delivered over 90 points, thrilling the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium crowd with end-to-end rugby.

Foote commended the work of backline coach Melusi Mthethwa, highlighting the team’s offensive growth throughout the tournament. “We’ve made massive strides in attack,” he said. “The players understand how we want to play, and it was incredible to hear the crowd respond when we brought the game to life.”

While disappointed by the result, the coaching staff remain optimistic. “We know we’re not the finished product,” Foote added. “But we’re on the right path, and the experience gained here is invaluable.”

Looking ahead, the Junior Bok coaches plan to send some players back to their provinces to compete in the SA Rugby U21 Cup to maintain match fitness. “It’ll be case-by-case,” Foote explained. “Some players will continue playing, while others will be managed carefully based on medical assessments.”

Team captain Riley Norton, who put in another strong performance at lock, praised his teammates for their resilience and the bonds formed during the tournament. “The experience of playing against top teams under pressure will be crucial for us in Italy,” said Norton.

He also thanked the local supporters: “It was an incredible honour to play in front of such a passionate crowd. Their energy meant a lot to us. We’re grateful to the people of Gqeberha for their support and hospitality throughout our stay.”
