Maxwell South Africa tour cancelled: Pretoria and Cape Town shows off

Grammy-winning R&B singer Maxwell has officially cancelled both of his scheduled August performances in South Africa.

The American star was due to perform at the SunBet Arena in Pretoria on 8 August, followed by a Cape Town show at the Grand Arena, GrandWest on 11 August. Instead, organisers have confirmed that the concerts will no longer go ahead after circumstances prevented the singer from travelling to South Africa.

Reportedly, the announcement follows discussions between Maxwell’s management and local promoter Vertex Events, who said every effort was made to keep the tour on track. According to the promoter, several options were explored, including moving the concerts to later in the year, but no practical solution could be found.

Organisers stressed that the cancellation was a mutual decision and that neither side had failed to meet its contractual obligations. The concerts had already reached an advanced planning stage, with venues secured and production, staging and event logistics fully prepared ahead of the performances.

In a message shared through Vertex Events, Maxwell expressed regret over the cancellation.

‘Due to unforeseen circumstances beyond my control, I’m unfortunately no longer able to perform in South Africa as planned. This decision wasn’t made lightly. I sincerely apologise to everyone who was looking forward to the shows. I appreciate your understanding and continued support. I hope to be back with you all soon.’

The announcement has sparked disappointment across social media, where many South African fans had been sharing their excitement in the lead-up to the concerts. Some expressed frustration at the late cancellation, while others wished the singer well and said they hoped the performances could be rescheduled.

‘I don’t know how to explain it, but the cancellation of Maxwell genuinely broke my heart. I was really looking forward to this concert’

Vertex Events has confirmed that everyone who purchased tickets will receive a full refund. Customers who booked through Webtickets will be contacted directly with information on the refund process and available options.

The promoter also said transparency with fans remains a priority and thanked audiences for their patience following the unexpected announcement.

While Maxwell will no longer perform in South Africa during 2026, there is still hope that local audiences won’t have to wait too long. His management has reportedly indicated that it intends to work with Vertex Events to secure new tour dates in 2027, recognising the strong demand for the R&B icon’s return.

Maxwell has built a loyal following in South Africa over the years, with his soulful blend of R&B, neo-soul and classic love songs earning him a dedicated fan base. Although this latest setback has left many disappointed, organisers remain optimistic that the postponed shows will eventually become a reality.
