What Makes the Carlton Centre Special?

The Carlton Centre has been a defining part of Johannesburg’s skyline since its completion in 1973. Built between 1967 and 1974, the 50-storey building was designed with international architectural standards and has become one of the city’s most visited attractions.

It offers:

  • The Top of Africa deck with 360-degree views

  • A massive shopping mall with over 180 stores

  • Commercial office space used by major businesses

  • A central location ideal for tourists and professionals

Experience the Top of Africa

At the very top of the Carlton Centre is the Top of Africa, a wraparound glass observation deck on the 50th floor. This floor provides the highest public viewpoint in the city.

From here, you can see:

  • Pretoria on clear days

  • The full Johannesburg skyline

  • Over 1 million trees in Joburg’s urban forest

  • Major landmarks including Hillbrow Tower and Ellis Park

For photographers and visitors, sunset is the best time to go, when the city lights start to flicker below.

Shopping and Dining Inside the Carlton Centre

The Carlton Centre is not just for sightseeing. It also offers:

  • Retail outlets for fashion, electronics, and more

  • Dining options from fast food to sit-down cafés

  • Essential services like banks and mobile stores

  • A central location that’s easy to reach via public transport

Whether you’re grabbing lunch or looking for a quick shopping fix, the centre has you covered.

Recent Developments (2024–2025)

In 2024, Transnet, the state-owned owner of the building, decided not to sell the property after a failed auction. Instead, it will:

  • Convert the former Carlton Hotel into affordable housing

  • Lease 3,000 m² of space to Shoprite

  • Focus on revitalizing the CBD and making better use of the structure

These changes reflect Johannesburg’s efforts to redevelop the downtown area and make it more accessible and sustainable.
