In Washington, Ramaphosa Aims to Reframe SA–US Relations

President Cyril Ramaphosa touched down in Washington DC on Monday for a working visit aimed at repairing South Africa’s relationship with the United States. His trip comes amid renewed diplomatic tensions and a recent surge in emigration claims from South African minorities.

The visit follows a controversial move by former US President Donald Trump, who authorised an executive order offering sanctuary to a group of Afrikaners under the false premise that they were victims of state persecution. This sparked international backlash and raised concerns over misinformation shaping foreign policy.

In a statement, the Presidency said Ramaphosa’s key objective was to “reset and revitalise” bilateral relations between South Africa and the US, with a particular focus on economic and trade matters.

Ramaphosa is scheduled to meet with Trump at the White House on Wednesday to address strained diplomatic ties and explore new trade and investment opportunities.

The delegation accompanying Ramaphosa includes senior cabinet ministers and envoys tasked with advancing South Africa’s international agenda. Among them are Ronald Lamola, Minister of International Relations and Co-operation; Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, Minister in the Presidency; Parks Tau, Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition; and John Steenhuisen, Minister of Agriculture. Special Envoy Mcebisi Jonas also joins the team.
