A 21-year-old man, identified as Mothusimang Moseme, was allegedly stabbed to death while protecting his mother in Hertzogville. A 42-year-old stepfather has been arrested.

A 21-year-old man was allegedly stabbed to death while trying to protect his mother during a domestic dispute in Hertzogville, Free State, police said.

What happened

Police said officers responded to a reported stabbing at Malebogo Location at about 19:30 on Saturday evening, 1 August. On arrival they were directed to the back of a shack, where they found the 21-year-old lying unresponsive in a pool of blood.

Emergency Medical Services declared the victim dead at the scene. Police identified him as Mothusimang Moseme (21). He had sustained a stab wound to the left side of his neck.

Allegations and injuries

Preliminary information from police indicates the suspect was allegedly assaulting the deceased’s mother inside the shack. The 21-year-old intervened to stop the assault and was allegedly stabbed in the neck during the confrontation.

The victim reportedly tried to flee but collapsed behind the shack, where he later died. Police said the deceased’s mother also sustained head injuries during the incident.

Arrest and legal action

Police recovered the knife believed to have been used and seized it as evidence. A 42-year-old stepfather was arrested and is expected to appear before the Hertzogville Magistrate’s Court on charges of murder and one count of attempted murder.

Investigation ongoing
