The Durban-born defender finally comes home to the club of his dreams.

For many young South African footballers, Europe represents the ultimate goal. The bright lights, international contracts, and global prestige are tempting for any rising star. Yet, Umlazi-born left-back Nkanyiso Shinga always aspired to wear one particular jersey; his heart belonged to the gold and black.

This week, Shinga officially signed with Kaizer Chiefs, fulfilling a lifelong ambition. Remarkably, he chose this path after turning down offers from clubs in Europe. At 25, Shinga decided to leave the continent where he had sharpened his skills for seven years. He wanted to return home and wear the Amakhosi badge he had always adored.

“Kaizer Chiefs was always the first prize.”

In an emotional interview, Shinga shared his joy about the move.

“I was really excited when Kaizer Chiefs came calling. It was always a dream of mine to play for Kaizer Chiefs, and I’m beyond excited to be living it.”

This transfer is a major coup for the Soweto giants, who are rebuilding under new head coach Nasreddine Nabi. Shinga arrives from the Portuguese side, Alverca, which was recently promoted to Portugal’s top tier. Although Europe provided more exposure, Shinga’s true loyalty remained with his home club.

A journey shaped by patience, grit, and life in Portugal

Shinga’s path has never followed the expected route. After developing at the KwaZulu-Natal Academy, he joined the first wave of South African players taking their chances in Portugal, following peers like Thabo Cele and Siphephelo Sithole. He launched his European career as a winger in the fourth division and then quickly progressed. Determined in every sense, he eventually broke into top-flight football.

His growth extended beyond on-field skills.

“Portugal taught me discipline, tactical understanding, and adaptability,” he reflected. “I started as an under-19 player, rose to the second division, and finally earned my spot in the top league. That journey shaped me into the player I am.”

Inspired by legends, playing for the people

Returning to South Africa carries deep personal meaning for Shinga. He grew up watching and idolising Tsepo Masilela, the revered Chiefs and Bafana Bafana left-back. Now, Shinga aims to follow in those storied footsteps, starting with the Toyota Cup against Ghana’s Asante Kotoko.

Scheduled for 26 July at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, this match will mark Shinga’s debut in front of a home crowd.

Recalling his childhood memories, he said,

“I’ve only ever watched a game there. To now walk onto that pitch, wearing the jersey of the team I love, in front of my people, it feels overwhelming in the best possible way.”

A versatile addition for Nabi’s new Amakhosi era

Beyond the emotional homecoming, Shinga brings valuable versatility to Chiefs. He is expected to compete with former Orlando Pirates player Paseka Mako for a starting role, setting up a fierce contest between two top-tier left-backs.

Shinga’s adaptability may give him the edge. Besides excelling at left-back, he can slot in as a left centre-back in a three-man defence, play in midfield, and even push up the wing. For coach Nabi, at the start of a preseason overhaul, this flexibility is a significant asset.

Kaizer Chiefs are concluding their preseason tour in the Netherlands. They will face PEC Zwolle and FC Twente in two back-to-back fixtures. While Shinga will not play in these matches, anticipation is already building for his local debut.

Social media reacts: “A real one comes home.”

Shinga’s decision to choose Chiefs over Europe has triggered a wave of admiration online. Fans have celebrated his commitment to local football and his loyalty to his roots.

One supporter wrote on X:

“Finally, someone who gets what it means to wear that jersey. A real one comes home.”

Other fans have noted the growing scale and appeal of South Africa’s PSL, which increasingly attracts top local talents who see it as a destination rather than just a stepping stone.

A bigger story than football

Shinga’s return resonates far beyond the transfer market. His story reflects a homecoming, a devotion to passion over prestige, and the value of bringing international experience back to South Africa. For this young man from Umlazi, the dream was never about Europe. The dream was always Kaizer Chiefs.

Now, that dream is a reality.
