Joggie Jansen: From 16-year-old Craven Week star to Springbok mainstay

Former Springbok centre Joggie Jansen began his representative rugby career as a teenager and later became a regular in South Africa’s Test side. He died on Sunday at the age of 78 after suffering a heart attack while visiting Otjiwarongo in Namibia.

Early promise at Craven Week

Born in Griekwastad on 5 February 1948, Jansen represented Griquas at the inaugural Craven Week in 1964 when he was 16 years old.

Steady rise to the Springboks

Six years after his Craven Week appearance, Jansen made his Test debut for South Africa against the All Blacks at Loftus Versfeld. He went on to earn 10 Test caps between 1970 and 1972.

1970 New Zealand series and a lasting image

Jansen played all four Tests in the 1970 series against New Zealand. His tackle on All Blacks flyhalf Wayne Cottrell became the moment most closely associated with his career.

“His famous tackle against New Zealand is part of Springbok folklore, but his contribution went far beyond one moment,”

“He was a Test player for South Africa and therefore an important part of our rugby heritage.”

Those words were spoken by SA Rugby president Mark Alexander.

International record and provincial success

During his international career, Jansen also faced France, Australia and England and scored one Test try. He played a further five tour matches for South Africa, scoring five tries.

At provincial level he later represented Free State and was part of the province’s 1976 Currie Cup-winning squad.

Tributes and legacy

SA Rugby extended its condolences to Jansen’s family, friends and former teammates. Alexander described Jansen as a player who “typified the Springboks of his era” and noted his commitment and courage in the national jersey.
