Community pride, strong ticket sales, and a full-day fan experience await in Mpumalanga

Mbombela is set to roar with Bok pride this weekend as more than 35,000 tickets have already been sold for the Springboks versus Georgia clash at Mbombela Stadium. For locals and fans travelling from afar, this is more than just a rugby match; it is a full day of celebration, community spirit, and green and gold fever.

Kick-off is at 17h10 on Saturday, but the call from organisers is clear: arrive early, soak up the vibe, and enjoy everything the stadium has to offer. From beer gardens to warm-up sessions, the event is designed to be a full experience, not just 80 minutes of rugby.

Come for the day, not just the match

Stadium manager Roelf Kotze has encouraged supporters to treat the event like a festival. “It is critical for people to plan their day and come early,” he said. “Do not come in just before the game and get stuck in traffic. Come and enjoy a beer in the beer garden, see the teams warm up, and be part of the energy. The pitch looks lovely; the stadium is beautifully dressed. It is going to be a special occasion.”

Fans are advised to use the park and ride system, since traffic around the stadium is expected to be heavy. With final preparations in place, Mbombela is ready to welcome the World Champions in style.

Mixed emotions in the community

For some in the Mataffin area, which surrounds the stadium, the atmosphere is electric. One excited fan said, “I could not watch the last time they played here, but this time I will be there live to see them in action.”

Others have not been as lucky. “It is very sad because when I went to buy tickets, they were already mostly sold,” said a disappointed local supporter.

Still, the presence of the Springboks in the neighbourhood means a lot. “I won’t be able to go to the game, but I am happy they will be around our hood,” another resident shared.

Police presence and security plans

Safety remains a top priority. Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli confirmed that SAPS and other law enforcement agencies have been deployed to manage traffic and ensure order.

“We urge drivers and fans to work with police when driving in and out of the stadium,” Mdhluli said. “Everything is in place to make sure we have a safe and enjoyable match day.”

Whether you are one of the lucky 35 000 with a ticket or just cheering from the neighbourhood, Saturday’s match promises to be a proud moment for Mbombela and another unforgettable chapter in South Africa’s love story with the Springboks.
