Nearly three years after his tragic death, the case that shook Mzansi finally sees a major breakthrough.

The murder of DJ Sumbody, real name Oupa John Sefoka, left a deep scar on South Africa’s entertainment industry. Now, after a long silence, justice appears to be catching up. This week, police confirmed that four men have been arrested in connection with his killing, including a well-known Gauteng businessman, Katiso Molefe, believed to be the mastermind.

Inside the Arrests: Courtroom Names and Allegations

All four suspects, Michael Pule, Floyd Mabusela, Mosa Kekana, and Katiso Molefe, appeared in the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday. The matter has been postponed to 29 July for further proceedings.

Police allege the suspects are not just tied to DJ Sumbody’s murder. They are also believed to be involved in at least 10 other serious crimes, including the shocking murder of Vereeniging engineer Armand Swart, who was tragically shot 23 times outside his workplace. Investigators believe Swart may have been a victim of mistaken identity.

In a chilling revelation, authorities confirmed that a firearm recovered during the operation has been linked to multiple murders, suggesting the group may be part of a larger, more organised network of contract killers operating in and around Johannesburg.

A Violent Night Remembered

DJ Sumbody was gunned down in Woodmead, Johannesburg, in 2022 while driving. The attack stunned fans and fellow musicians across the country. At the time, speculation swirled around the motive, from business rivalry to personal vendettas, but nothing was confirmed.

Even now, police remain cautious about sharing the motive. However, sources close to the investigation have told media that tensions over business deals or private conflicts may have played a role.

EFF Speaks Out: “A Milestone for Justice”

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) wasted no time responding to the arrests. In a public statement, the party commended Gauteng’s organised crime detectives and the Political Killings Task Team for their work.

“We commend the determined and methodical investigation which has now resulted in the arrest of three suspected hitmen and the individual believed to have ordered the killing,” the party said.

They also highlighted the discovery of the linked firearm as a grim reminder of how deep organised violence runs and why specialised police units are crucial.

Public Reaction: “About Time”

On social media, South Africans reacted with a mix of relief, sadness, and frustration. Many have called for transparency and speed in the upcoming court proceedings, while others reflected on the long delay since DJ Sumbody’s killing.

“Justice delayed is not justice denied. But it better not be delayed any longer,”
one user wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Another added,

“We lost a cultural giant. The least the system can do now is follow through.”

What Happens Next?

The suspects face charges of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. All four remain in custody until their next appearance at the end of July.

For now, the hope is that this arrest signals a real step forward in a case that has left both fans and family in limbo.

DJ Sumbody may be gone, but his story and his fight for justice continue.
