When Gabriela Salgado went down during the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations semi-final clash against Nigeria, it was more than just another injury on the pitch; it was a moment that silenced an entire continent of supporters.

The 83rd-minute tackle from behind, which left Salgado crumpled in anguish, sent shockwaves across African women’s football. As her teammates surrounded her in tears, the reality of the injury hit hard: a broken tibia and fibula in her left leg. Her WAFCON dream was over. So was her club season with JVW FC.

But in a rare display of decisive leadership and care, the South African Football Association (SAFA) has now stepped up to fully fund and oversee her rehabilitation. According to SAFA’s chief medical officer Dr Thulani Ngwenya, Salgado’s journey to full recovery will be managed directly by the national body.

Home, Hurt, but Healing

Salgado returned to Johannesburg on Monday morning, accompanied by Banyana team manager Lauren Duncan. She’d just undergone surgery in Morocco following the match and was flown back as soon as it was safe to do so.

“Gaby has been discharged from the hospital, and the operation went very well,” said Dr Ngwenya. “She’s now home with her family. She’s in good spirits, just dealing with the expected post-op pain after a long flight.”

Though SAFA will involve her club side, JVW FC, in the rehab process, they’ve made it clear they won’t be taking a backseat. “She was injured on national duty, so we will lead the process with JVW in support,” added Ngwenya. “In women’s football, we take full responsibility where we can.”

A Season Cut Short

The road to recovery won’t be short. With both major bones in her lower leg fractured, Salgado is expected to be sidelined for the rest of the year. Her absence leaves a noticeable gap in the Hollywoodbets Super League and an emotional void for Banyana Banyana fans.

Social media has been flooded with tributes and well-wishes for the 25-year-old winger, who’s known not just for her attacking flair but for her energy, work ethic, and heart. Former captain Janine van Wyk was one of the first to publicly send love and support, calling Salgado “a fighter with so much more to give.”

More Than Just a Comeback

Beyond the physical pain, Salgado’s injury has once again highlighted the challenges faced by women footballers when it comes to medical care, insurance, and long-term support. In many countries, injured female athletes often find themselves without cover, left to navigate surgeries, physio, and rehab on their own.

SAFA’s commitment to taking charge of Salgado’s healing process is a strong statement in a sport that often fails its injured stars. And while the recovery will be long, the message to South African women footballers is clear: if you give your all in green and gold, you won’t be left behind.

For now, Gabriela Salgado rests at home, bruised and bandaged but surrounded by love and backed by a federation finally acting with urgency and care. Her comeback isn’t just anticipated; it’s a matter of national pride.
