Red Bull’s Shift in Leadership: Helmut Marko Explains Christian Horner’s Sacking

Helmut Marko Opens Up: Why Christian Horner Was Let Go by Red Bull
Red Bull’s decision to part ways with Christian Horner in July 2025 marked the end of an era, and Helmut Marko, the team’s influential advisor, has finally spoken out about the reasons behind the shocking dismissal. After over 20 years at the helm of one of the most successful teams in Formula 1, Horner’s exit has stirred much speculation. However, Marko has made it clear that performance, or the lack thereof, was the driving factor in the decision.
In an exclusive interview with Sky Germany, Marko explained that Horner’s sacking came down to a combination of factors, with the main one being the team’s diminishing on-track results. “The decision was made by the management—Oliver Mintzlaff specifically,” Marko revealed. “We informed Christian Horner of it in London. At the same time, we officially thanked him for 20 years and eight world titles.”
Despite Red Bull’s unmatched success from 2021 to 2024, with Max Verstappen securing four consecutive Drivers’ Championships, the 2025 season saw a noticeable dip in the team’s form. McLaren, a team that has long been a competitor, emerged as a dominant force, leaving Red Bull struggling to keep pace. Marko noted that this drop in performance played a pivotal role in the team’s decision to make a change.
Performance: The Heart of the Decision

While several factors contributed to Horner’s sacking, Marko pointed to Red Bull’s recent performance struggles as the primary reason. The departure of key personnel, including legendary designer Adrian Newey, seemed to coincide with the team’s slip in form. Marko didn’t mince words about the situation: “Performance was not quite where it should be,” he said, underscoring that the decision was largely about getting Red Bull back on track.
Additionally, Horner’s tenure was marred by off-track issues. In 2024, the team principal faced allegations of inappropriate behavior, which were investigated and ultimately cleared. Although Horner’s name was cleared, the cloud of controversy may have affected his standing within the team, even if performance was the final determining factor for his departure.
Helmut Marko’s Role in Red Bull’s Future
Helmut Marko, as a key figure in Red Bull’s leadership, played a significant role in this decision. Known for his blunt and candid assessments of the team’s performance, Marko has always been a driving force behind Red Bull’s strategy. It was no surprise that he was the one to address the matter publicly, offering insight into what went wrong and the team’s future direction.
Marko’s trust in Laurent Mekies, Horner’s successor, reflects his confidence in a return to form. Mekies, promoted from leading Red Bull’s junior team, Racing Bulls, will take on a more technical and focused role, which Marko believes will benefit the team. “He’s an excellent engineer, which is a good fit considering the complex technology in Formula 1,” Marko commented. With Mekies’ background in engineering, Red Bull hopes to return to its winning ways, focusing primarily on racing rather than the broader corporate responsibilities Horner once handled.
Marko on the Transition: What Mekies Brings to the Table
According to Marko, Mekies’ appointment is part of a broader shift in Formula 1 leadership, with many teams opting for technical experts as team principals. McLaren’s Andrea Stella is a shining example of this new trend, and Marko is optimistic that Mekies’ technical expertise will bring Red Bull the edge it needs to close the gap to McLaren.
“Mekies’ role will be significantly more focused—primarily on racing,” Marko said. He stressed that Mekies’ streamlined responsibilities, including a clearer focus on technical aspects, would help him bring the team back to its former glory. Marko also mentioned that the larger responsibilities previously handled by Horner—such as marketing, powertrains, and the RB17 project—would now be managed by separate departments, giving Mekies more room to concentrate on Red Bull’s racing performance.
Marko’s comments reveal a deeper strategic shift at Red Bull, one that sees the team reorienting its leadership for greater focus on engineering excellence and on-track success. With Mekies at the helm, Marko believes the team will be able to mount a more serious challenge to McLaren’s dominance in the 2025 season.
Max Verstappen: A New Chapter for Red Bull
Amidst the shake-up, speculation had swirled about Max Verstappen’s future with Red Bull. Many wondered if the team’s decision to part ways with Horner was in response to pressure from the Dutch driver, who had been instrumental in the team’s success. However, Marko clarified that Verstappen had no involvement in the decision-making process.
Verstappen himself appeared indifferent to the change, stating, “They decided to change. I’m fine with everything.” The driver, who has long been a central figure at Red Bull, reaffirmed that his relationship with Horner remained strong, and that he had simply accepted the decision made by Red Bull’s management.
Interestingly, Verstappen’s father, Jos Verstappen, had been vocal about Horner’s exit, even suggesting in early 2024 that it was time for the team principal to go. However, Max Verstappen’s comments after the Belgian Grand Prix indicated that he had no hard feelings about the decision, stating, “It’s fine.”
Looking Ahead: Red Bull’s Road to Recovery
As Red Bull enters a new era with Laurent Mekies leading the charge, Helmut Marko’s vision for the team’s future remains clear: return to the top of Formula 1. With a renewed focus on technical excellence and racing performance, Red Bull aims to close the gap to McLaren and assert its dominance once again.
Marko’s faith in Mekies and the new leadership structure will be tested in the months ahead, but Red Bull’s history of bouncing back from adversity suggests that this could be just the start of a fresh chapter in their F1 journey.
With new leadership in place, it’s clear that Red Bull’s ambitions remain as high as ever. Now, it’s up to Mekies and the team to prove that they can return to the pinnacle of Formula 1 racing, just as they did during Horner’s reign.
