It’s bold, it’s bright, and it’s back. Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat has returned to Johannesburg, and this time, it’s got a fresh twist for 2025.

Staged at the Pieter Toerien Main Theatre at Montecasino, this vibrant revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s musical brings new energy, a star-studded cast, and all the songs fans know by heart. Whether you’re reliving childhood nostalgia or sharing the experience with your own children, this production is built for every generation.

A new cast with big voices

Leading the way is Dylan Janse Van Rensburg as Joseph, following his standout performance in Spring Awakening. He’s joined by powerhouse vocalist Lelo Ramasimong as the Narrator and actor-presenter Christopher Jaftha as the Pharaoh, complete with Elvis flair and all the charisma.

Together with a dynamic young ensemble, the cast delivers a fast-paced show filled with timeless hits like Any Dream Will Do, Close Every Door, There’s One More Angel in Heaven, and Go, Go, Go Joseph.

A crowd-pleaser for all ages

The show runs for just under two hours, including an interval, making it ideal for families, schools, and anyone needing a musical theatre fix that leaves them smiling. This isn’t just a stage performance; it’s a full-colour celebration of storytelling through song, with clever staging and feel-good energy that lights up the theatre.

Unlike the more traditional or educational versions many South Africans may remember from school, this reboot is sleek, cheeky, and made to wow.

Theatre that brings people together

Social media is already lighting up with praise. Early audiences have called it “absolutely electric” and “bursting with life.” One fan posted, “Joseph at Montecasino gave me chills. I was singing before the show ended.”

Montecasino’s Pieter Toerien Theatre has a strong reputation for hosting South Africa’s top-tier musicals, and this run of Joseph fits right in. It’s a reminder that world-class theatre doesn’t have to be far from home or hard on the wallet. Tickets range from R200 to R475, offering something for every budget.

Final dates and venue

The show is running from 31 July 2025 and throughout August, with performances scheduled at 7:30pm and weekend matinees. If you’re planning a family night out, a date night, or a feel-good solo theatre trip, Joseph is the kind of show that leaves you humming long after the curtain falls.
