Game. Set. Give Back: Kgothatso Montjane Opens Tennis Court for Special Needs Learners in Limpopo

From Wimbledon glory to grassroots impact, Kgothatso Montjane is championing change beyond the court.
South African tennis star Kgothatso Montjane has secured another victory, this time for her community. In a powerful Women’s Month initiative, she unveiled a state-of-the-art tennis and multipurpose sports facility at Letaba Special School in Tzaneen, Limpopo.
Montjane, a trailblazer in wheelchair tennis and a proud Limpopo native, is now making history off the court. She stands as one of the first active South African athletes to personally fund and deliver sports infrastructure while still competing at an elite level.
A Legacy of Inclusion and Empowerment
The new facility is more than just a sports court. It is a symbol of accessibility, pride, and opportunity. Designed for learners with special needs, the project was driven by the Montjane Sports Development Foundation. Montjane emphasises that the space is for all children, whether they aspire to play professionally or simply enjoy recreational activity.
“I am thrilled we’ve brought this vision to life,” she told SABC Sport. “This is not just for future tennis stars. It’s for every child who deserves the joy of movement and play.”
The Women’s Month launch was intentional. Montjane, who has shattered barriers in a male-dominated sport, sees it as proof of women’s leadership in community development. “We can build, we can inspire, and we can create lasting change,” she added.
From Local Roots to Global Ambitions
Montjane’s momentum continues internationally. After a strong 2025 season, she is now preparing for the US Open, where she aims to add another major title to her legacy.
“Preparations are on track,” she shared. “I’m playing with confidence, and my goal is to finish the year at my peak.”
Her dedication to sport is matched by her commitment to social impact. The Limpopo project is not just about tennis. It’s about ensuring every child, especially those with disabilities, has a place to thrive.
Community Applause
The initiative has drawn widespread praise. On social media, supporters celebrated Montjane’s efforts:
“Kgothatso is a national treasure. She’s putting Limpopo on the map in the best way.”
“This is true leadership. She didn’t wait for change. She built it.”
“Representation matters. Thank you for remembering our children.”
Montjane credits her team and foundation partners for turning the dream into reality. “None of this would be possible without their hard work,” she said.
A Challenge to South Africa
In a country where many rural schools lack proper sports facilities, Montjane’s project sets a bold example. It proves that transformation begins with individuals who take action, even while pursuing their own greatness.
Letaba Special School now boasts one of Limpopo’s finest sports resources. And thanks to a champion who serves both aces and hope, its students have one more reason to dream bigger.
