Nearly two months after Patriotic Alliance (PA) deputy president Kenny Kunene was suspended, party leader Gayton McKenzie says the investigation into his conduct is “nearly done.” Kunene, who resigned as Johannesburg’s MMC for transport, is being investigated after he was found at the home of Katiso “KT” Molefe, the man arrested for the murder of popular musician DJ Sumbody.

A Visit That Raised Eyebrows

Kunene admitted to being at Molefe’s home in July when police swooped in on the murder suspect. His explanation? He claims he was there to arrange a meeting for a journalist from his online platform, Africa Global News, in pursuit of an exclusive story.

But his presence at such a sensitive location raised alarm bells, forcing McKenzie to suspend him from his party role while an investigation was launched.

Social media lit up in the days that followed, with users debating whether the businessman-turned-politician was simply unlucky to be in the wrong place at the wrong time or whether there was more to the story.

“This is South African politics. You can’t make this stuff up,” one X user posted, while another wrote: “If he’s clean, let the investigation clear him. But being there looks bad.”

McKenzie Calls for Calm

Addressing PA supporters on Sunday night, McKenzie said the investigation had moved swiftly and was now close to conclusion.

“So the investigators have interviewed the deputy president and everybody else, so we’re just waiting for the result,” he explained.

He urged members of the public and the party faithful not to expect instant answers:
“You can’t interfere because if we interfere, then you’re going to go like, ah, you’re interfering, he’s interfering again,” McKenzie said, clearly frustrated with speculation that he was dragging his feet.

From City Hall to Police Matter

Kunene’s resignation from the Johannesburg council in July shifted the matter firmly into the hands of law enforcement. Mayor Dada Morero confirmed at the time that the council had no jurisdiction once Kunene stepped down.

Kunene, meanwhile, has insisted the allegations are “unfounded.” He maintains he is proud of his achievements during his stint as MMC for transport, pointing to infrastructure upgrades and service delivery initiatives.

The Shadow of DJ Sumbody’s Murder

The investigation carries extra weight because of the case it is linked to: the murder of Oupa John Sefoka, better known as DJ Sumbody, who was gunned down in Woodmead on 20 November 2022 in a hail of bullets. His death sent shockwaves through the music industry and beyond, highlighting once again the deadly intersections of celebrity, money, and criminal networks in South Africa.

For the Patriotic Alliance, the Kunene investigation has become a test of credibility. The party, known for its bold rhetoric and grassroots appeal, cannot afford to be seen as shielding one of its most high-profile figures.

Waiting for Answers

For now, the ball is in the investigators’ court. McKenzie’s message is clear: trust the process, however uncomfortable the waiting may be.

Whether Kunene emerges exonerated or faces deeper scrutiny, the outcome will ripple far beyond his political career. It will shape how South Africans view accountability, not just in politics, but in a society where crime and power are often uncomfortably intertwined.
