Ramaphosa orders rigorous probe after six women found dead in and around Kempton Park

President Cyril Ramaphosa has ordered a thorough police investigation after six women’s bodies were discovered in and around Kempton Park, the Presidency said. The deaths, spanning areas on the East Rand, have prompted an urgent law-enforcement response and appeals for community cooperation.

What happened

Authorities say the discoveries cover a period between 15 July 2026 and 14 September 2026. The most recent body was found on a Tuesday in Kwa-Thema, Springs, bringing the total to six. Other locations named in reporting include Kempton Park and Olifantsfontein.

Government reaction and direction to police

Ramaphosa extended condolences to the affected families and communities, saying the incidents have caused “fear and uncertainty in our communities, and especially among women.” He said he had spoken to the Police Minister and the Acting National Police Commissioner, who briefed him on the investigations.

“I have directed that these cases be prioritised and that no stone be left unturned in bringing those responsible to justice,” Ramaphosa said.

The President also called for cooperation between the public and police, saying information from communities could be crucial to identifying those responsible and stopping further attacks.

Reporting indicates that several of the victims were reportedly found to have been sexually assaulted. Four women had previously been found dead over two months in the Kempton Park area, and another body was discovered in Olifantsfontein the day before the Kwa-Thema discovery.
