Joburg Zoo Family Picnic and Kids Festival: A Day of Colour and Fun for All

If you’ve been waiting for a reason to pack a blanket, round up the kids, and head outdoors, this September is giving Joburg families the perfect excuse. On Saturday, 27 September 2025, the Johannesburg Zoo will be transformed into a lively playground for the Joburg Family Picnic and Kids Festival.
A Celebration in the Heart of Parkview
Set against the leafy backdrop of Jan Smuts Avenue, the event promises a full day of laughter and colour. The festival runs from 10 am until 6 pm, long enough for families to take in both the zoo’s animals and the entertainment lined up on the day. The organisers are encouraging guests to wear white T-shirts, perfect for the colour splash activities that will have little ones giggling and parents snapping photos for Instagram.
What to Expect on the Day
From carnival rides and games to live performances, the festival is designed to cater to both kids and adults. Younger visitors can enjoy themed play zones, while parents can join in on adult-sized fun like jumping castles and relaxed picnicking spots. A walk through the zoo will be part of the experience, making it more than just a festival; it’s also an exploration of one of Joburg’s favourite landmarks.
Food stalls and refreshments will keep energy levels high, with plenty of treats for picky eaters and parents in need of a coffee break. Colourful decorations and vibrant setups will bring a carnival atmosphere right into the city’s most historic zoo.
Ticket Info and Extras
Tickets are tiered, so early birds will save. Kids’ tickets cost R170 in Phase 1 and R200 in Phase 2. Adults pay R150 in Phase 1 and R180 in Phase 2. For those who want to bring their own snacks and drinks, a cooler box ticket is available at R100.
Tickets can be booked online through Computicket and Webtickets, which makes securing a spot for the family quick and easy.
Why It Matters
Johannesburg is not short on family events, but this festival has carved out its own charm. The blend of outdoor zoo adventures, carnival entertainment, and shared picnic vibes is a refreshing reminder of what the city can offer beyond malls and screens. With spring in the air, the timing could not be better for families looking to reconnect, unwind, and enjoy simple joys together.
So if you’re looking for a way to make lasting memories this Heritage Month weekend, mark 27 September on your calendar. The Joburg Family Picnic and Kids Festival at the Zoo is set to be one of those rare outings that balances both kids’ excitement and adults’ relaxation.
