The first week of October has rolled in with sunshine after a brief chill, and Johannesburg is buzzing with events that celebrate food, art, culture and community. Whether you are looking for a family-friendly market, a glamorous night out, or a performance that will leave you spellbound, the city has something for everyone this weekend.

Family fun and night markets

Kick things off on Friday at the Town Square at Newmarket Night Market in Alberton. The cobblestoned square, lit with fairy lights, comes alive with live music, DJs and a mix of food trucks and bars. Children are kept entertained with face painting, balloon art, ceramic painting and even a water play feature. Entry is free, making it a popular community hangout.

Over in Sandton, The Maslow Hotel’s Friday Fivefold Indulgence offers a more refined start to the weekend. Expect a five-course menu curated by Executive Sous Chef Thokozane Shongwe, where each dish celebrates seasonal ingredients in a stylish yet relaxed bistro setting.

Flowers, food, and festive vibes

On Saturday, the annual A Blooming Affair returns to Roedean School in Parktown, showcasing floral exhibitions alongside market stalls and food vendors. It’s a beloved tradition during Garden Month and a family-friendly day out.

Wine lovers can make their way to The Wanderers Club in Illovo for the Pick n Pay Wine and Food Festival, running both Saturday and Sunday. With 71 producers showcasing their varietals, it’s a record year for the event and a must for anyone who appreciates South Africa’s wine heritage.

Culture on stage and screen

For a weekend of spectacle, the Joburg Ballet’s Celestial Bodies premieres at the Nelson Mandela Theatre. Choreographed by Mario Gaglione, it’s a bold collaboration that blends science, music and dance. Meanwhile, Montecasino welcomes back the Broadway hit Chicago, complete with its sizzling choreography and iconic numbers.

Theatre lovers also have the chance to catch Beauty in the Broken at Theatre on the Square, where actress Gaynor Young shares her moving story of resilience, or the laugh-out-loud farce Noises Off at Pieter Toerien Theatre.

Markets, food, and shopping

Johannesburg’s markets remain a highlight this weekend. Head to Bryanston Market’s Diwali Celebration, where authentic Indian street food, crafts, fashion, and a glow-up party with DJ TremHer set the tone for festivities.

For food truck delights, Rosebank Mall’s Street Feast offers live music, DJs, and even a complimentary rooibos gin cocktail for the first 100 guests. Shoppers can also explore the Rendezvous Pop-Up in Hyde Park, which marks its fourth anniversary with curated fashion, lifestyle, and homeware finds.

Sport, music, and pride

Sports fans can cheer on equestrian talent at the Toyota South African Derby in Kyalami, one of the country’s longest-running competitions. Or, join the Simbine Sports Festival at Edenglen High School, where sprinter Akani Simbine himself will be racing.

For those celebrating identity and artistry, Johannesburg Pride at The Nest promises a full day of queer African fashion, music, and culture, while Soweto Cheese and Wine Live combines fine wine with food and live entertainment.

Beyond Joburg: Pretoria highlights

Pretoria is also buzzing with events. Highlights include Pretoria Pride at Centurion Rugby Club, Oktoberfest at Capital Craft, the Ultimate Braai Festival in Zwavelpoort and a special performance by Kenny G at SunBet Arena. Music fans can also catch Summer Walker and Jessie Reyez at the In the City concert.

Joburg this weekend is bursting with choice. Whether your heart leans towards wine, theatre, sport, or simply soaking up the sunshine at a market, the city is ready to welcome you. After a long winter, this is the perfect time to get out, explore, and celebrate the energy of October in Gauteng.
