Hugo Broos Admits World Cup Setback But Refuses To Give Up Hope

Broos Admits Heartbreak After Draw With Zimbabwe
Bafana Bafana’s road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup hit a painful detour on Friday night, as South Africa’s 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe at a packed Moses Mabhida Stadium left their qualification hopes hanging by a thread.
For coach Hugo Broos, it was a night filled with frustration and regret. After leading Group C for nearly two years, Bafana now find themselves two points behind Benin, who clinched a narrow 1-0 win over Rwanda. The result leaves South Africa needing both results and fortune to go their way in the final round of qualifiers.
“A Very Sad Night For Us,” Says Broos
Speaking after the match, Broos didn’t hide his disappointment. “Tonight, it’s a very sad night for us,” he said. “We knew the match would be tough, and we had our chances, but luck was not on our side.”
The Belgian mentor pointed to missed opportunities including a ball cleared off the line and another that struck the post as moments that could have changed everything. “We played against a very motivated team who fought for every meter,” he added. “The relations between these two teams are always tense, and that showed again tonight.”
The Math: What Bafana Need To Qualify
With Benin now on 17 points and Bafana on 15, the equation is simple yet daunting. South Africa must beat Rwanda in their final match, and hope Nigeria defeat Benin in Uyo on Tuesday.
A draw between the two West African sides could still work in South Africa’s favour, but only if Bafana win by at least three goals a tall order for a team that has struggled to convert chances in recent games.
“It’s Not 100% Lost,” Broos Insists
Despite the setback, Broos urged his players and fans to keep believing. “It becomes more difficult now, but it’s not 100% lost,” he said. “If we win our game, we’ll see what happens. That’s the most important thing.”
Broos noted that Nigeria’s own situation in the group could influence the final standings, hinting that the Super Eagles’ motivation to finish strong might work in South Africa’s favour.
One Last Push For The Dream
With everything on the line, Bafana’s final group clash against Rwanda has taken on the weight of a do-or-die encounter. Broos admitted his team will need to recover emotionally but promised they would fight until the end.
“We’ll be down for a day or two,” he said, “but we’ll make sure the team believes again on Tuesday. The goal difference might decide who goes to America or not and we have to make sure we do our part.”
For South Africans who’ve followed this long qualification journey, hope remains thin, fragile, but alive.
