A November Showcase of Rhythm, Grace and South African Spirit

After a sold-out October run at UJ Arts & Culture, WGRUV Dance Company is bringing Art Effect to Roodepoort Theatre this November, a final chance for Joburg audiences to witness one of the most powerful local dance productions of the year.

Running from 5 to 7 November 2025, Art Effect fuses classical technique with South African storytelling, featuring four choreographers whose works span continents, emotions, and disciplines. It’s a show where ballet meets rhythm, where competition becomes art, and where hope takes physical form.

A Journey Through Four Worlds of Dance

Each segment of Art Effect tells a distinct story through movement.

In “Vivace Motifs,” choreographer Jessica Lang reimagines Baroque-inspired ballet for a modern stage. Performed by six dancers and set to the timeless music of Handel and Corelli, it’s a study in precision, symmetry, and elegance.

“Postures” by Lex and Holly Gruver brings visual art to life, drawing from Johannesburg artist Greatjoy Ndlovu’s charcoal masterpieces. His exploration of human emotion is translated into dance that moves between stillness and release, tracing the quiet power of hope.

“Game On” by Lauren Lovette, a former New York City Ballet principal, adds a playful edge, a duet of movement that flirts with competition and surrender. The two dancers circle each other like rivals and partners, transforming athletic energy into grace.

Finally, “Rosie” by Roseline Wilkins brings a proudly African heartbeat to the production. Performed with live percussion by Decius Pitjadi and Tommy Gruver, the piece dives deep into Wilkins’ personal journey, threading together rhythm, memory, and resilience in a story that feels unmistakably South African.

Why You Should See It

WGRUV Dance Company has built a reputation for fusing international artistry with local authenticity. Under the direction of Holly Gruver, Art Effect embodies that vision: movement that doesn’t just entertain but awakens emotion.

At Roodepoort Theatre, the November performances promise an atmosphere charged with rhythm and intimacy. It’s dance as dialogue, where every motion feels like a conversation between body, sound, and soul.

If you missed the October season, this is your final chance to experience Art Effect, a production that celebrates unity through art and the universal language of movement.
