Ekurhuleni Grieves As Reiger Park Violence Claims Six Lives

The community of Reiger Park in Ekurhuleni is reeling after six people were killed in a weekend shooting that Acting Mayor Jongizizwe Dlabathi has described as evidence of “uncontrollable” crime in the area.

The incident, which unfolded late on Saturday night, has reignited long-standing fears about safety in the East Rand township, where violent crimes from drive-by shootings to gang activity have plagued residents for years.

Dlabathi: “Something Must Be Done”

Visiting the grief-stricken families on Monday, Dlabathi said the City would work closely with law enforcement to improve policing and ensure that communities no longer live in fear. He also promised additional resources for the Reiger Park Police Station to strengthen crime prevention and patrol visibility.

“We should say that prevention is better than cure,” Dlabathi told residents. “Something must be done in the area and across the city of Ekurhuleni to make sure communities are safe and there’s little space for this to transpire.”

Investigation Underway But No Arrests Yet

While no arrests have been made, a provincial investigative team has been deployed to assist local police. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, though residents have pointed to growing tensions linked to criminal networks operating in the township.

Authorities are appealing to anyone with information to come forward as the community mourns another senseless tragedy.

A City Struggling With Violence

Reiger Park’s struggles mirror broader concerns across Gauteng, where violent crime rates remain stubbornly high despite various anti-crime operations. Many residents say they feel abandoned, as shootings and robberies continue to claim lives at alarming rates.

As Ekurhuleni’s leadership pledges a renewed focus on safety, residents hope this latest tragedy will finally bring more than condolences and spark meaningful action to make their streets safe again.
