A Bar with a Story

Hidden just below Katy’s Palace Bar in Kramerville, Sandton, Sir James Van Der Merwe isn’t your typical watering hole. It’s the kind of place that feels like a secret club, part vintage parlour, part urban escape. From its black-and-white tiled floors to the walls lined with eclectic portraits, this venue blends old-world sophistication with unmistakable Joburg attitude.

Named after an imagined gentleman traveller who set out to create the perfect bar, Sir James is designed as both a homage to timeless style and a toast to the modern social scene. Here, you can sink into a leather chair, sip a handcrafted cocktail, and feel like you’ve stumbled into someone’s private collection of stories, artefacts, and conversations that never quite end.

The Look and Feel

The interior is steeped in character. Pressed ceilings, Persian rugs, copper lanterns, and soft lighting make every corner photogenic. The space, 220 square metres in total, can host up to 270 guests cocktail-style or 80 seated banquet-style, making it one of Sandton’s most flexible event spots.

It’s not just about aesthetics either. The venue comes equipped with a fully functional kitchen, backup power, and a liquor licence operating from 10:00 to 02:00, meaning the good times can last well into the early hours. It’s perfect for corporate launches, private celebrations, and even wedding afterparties where the playlist runs longer than the speeches.

The Sir James Experience

Every detail feels curated to match its “gentleman’s journey” narrative. The bar is fully stocked with premium spirits, and guests can choose from a refined list of preferred caterers, including Calico & Cream, Fresh Creative Catering, Pippa’s Food, and Vicky Crease, all known for their quality and creative flair.

Sound and lighting are handled by Surge Sound, Sound Corp, or Fundamental Entertainment, while top local photographers like Michael Tree and Charles Johnstone capture the magic. Whether it’s an intimate engagement dinner or a brand’s year-end soirée, the venue’s setup ensures a seamless experience.

Booking and Beyond

Hiring the venue in 2025 costs R25 800 (excluding VAT), while photo shoots start at R1 500 per hour. Corporate and film productions are also welcome, with custom options for décor, catering, and entertainment.

And just like its upstairs sibling, Katy’s Palace Bar, Sir James Van Der Merwe operates on a philosophy of effortless hosting; everything from setup to closing time is managed with warmth and precision. With its unique blend of comfort, style, and history, it’s no wonder this spot remains one of Joburg’s most treasured event venues.
