A place of learning was transformed into a scene of tragedy on Tuesday evening when a gunman breached a Tembisa primary school, killing the principal and an administrative staff member in a cold-blooded attack.

The incident occurred around 5pm inside the administration block of Inxiweni Primary School. The 58-year-old principal and her 55-year-old administrator were working late, preparing for a meeting scheduled for later this week, when their lives were abruptly cut short.

A Terrifying Ordeal for Colleagues

According to the Gauteng Department of Education, colleagues working in a nearby office heard the devastating sound of gunshots. Fearing for their own lives, they hid until the situation seemed safe. When they emerged, they made the horrific discovery: the two women lying fatally wounded in a passageway.

Emergency services were called and responded swiftly, but there was nothing that could be done. Both women were declared dead at the scene. The sanctity of the school, a place dedicated to nurturing young minds, had been violently shattered.

A Community in Mourning

The news sent shockwaves through the community. Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi and Education MEC Matome Chiloane visited the school later that night to assess the situation and offer their support directly to the grieving families.

In the wake of the trauma, the department has mobilized its support systems. Psychosocial support teams were dispatched to the school on Wednesday to provide critical counselling and trauma support for the learners. Employee wellness officials will also be on-site to support the teachers and staff who have lost their colleagues and now must grapple with the fear and grief that has invaded their workplace.

Police have launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the double murder. For now, a school is left to mourn, and a community is left asking why a place of hope became the backdrop for such a senseless and brutal act.
