December holidays are meant for family reunions, road trips, and switching off from the stress of the year. Yet as the festive rush picks up, the rainy season often has other plans. From sudden cloudbursts to slippery highways, motorists across the country are facing tougher driving conditions than usual.

Recent downpours have already left several provinces dealing with flooding, damaged roads, and poor visibility. It is a reminder that when the weather turns, our driving habits must change too.

The weather is changing the way we drive

Tyre specialist Dev Naidoo has seen firsthand how weather plays a direct role in road safety. Speaking to The Citizen, he noted that while many South Africans slow down when it rains, not everyone adapts their driving enough to stay safe.

Cold fronts bring another challenge. When temperatures drop, tyre pressure falls. Lower pressure can create uneven wear and, in severe cases, lead to a blowout. It is the kind of detail drivers often miss until something goes wrong.

The grip between tyres and road surface also changes the moment rainfall hits. Wet or icy patches can make ordinary braking or turning far more dangerous if a car is moving too fast or the tyres are worn out.

As Naidoo puts it, adjusting speed and keeping more space between vehicles can make the difference between getting home safely and not arriving at all.

Holiday travel calls for extra care

Thousands of Joburgers and travellers from all corners of South Africa will soon be heading to beaches, bush getaways, and hometown celebrations. More cars on the road mean more opportunities for mistakes and delays, especially in wet conditions.

To help families reach their holiday destinations safely, Naidoo shared a list of smart safety habits that every driver should follow.

Safety checklist for rainy season road trips

Give your tyres attention
Make sure the tread depth is at least 1.6 mm and check the pressure before long trips. Tyres lose pressure in colder weather.

Slow down
Wet roads reduce traction. Lower speeds give you more reaction time and control.

Create space
Increase your following distance because stopping distances are longer on wet roads.

Switch headlights on
Rain limits how far you can see and how easily others can spot you. Proper lighting keeps everyone alert.

Avoid sharp moves
Smooth steering, acceleration, and braking help prevent skidding.

Approach puddles cautiously
Standing water can cause hydroplaning. Move through puddles slowly and steadily.

Replace worn-out wipers
If they smear or squeak, it is time for new ones. Clear vision is essential.

Stay patient
Expect delays. Stress and rushing can lead to risky decisions.

A safe arrival is the best gift of the season

There is no shortage of holiday excitement on South Africa’s roads this December. Families are eager to get to the good part: relaxation, celebrations, and sun. With a little preparation, awareness, and patience, drivers can take control of the journey even when the skies are gloomy.

Arriving safely always means more time to enjoy the holiday spirit.
