JMPD launches manhunt after officer disarmed in Lenasia

A Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officer was disarmed while on duty in Lenasia on Thursday, prompting authorities to launch a full-scale manhunt for the suspects.

What happened

According to JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla, the incident occurred while the officer was carrying out official duties in Lenasia.

“During the encounter, the suspects managed to disarm the officer before fleeing the scene in a getaway vehicle toward the Golden Highway,”

said Fihla.

Officer’s condition and support

The JMPD said the officer did not sustain any serious physical injuries during the incident. Authorities have activated medical and wellness support services to assist the officer following the traumatic ordeal.

Investigation and response

The metropolitan police department described the attack as a serious threat to public safety.

“An attack on an officer represents a direct threat to the safety of our communities,”

Fihla added.

He said dedicated JMPD units, working alongside other law enforcement agencies, have launched an investigation aimed at recovering the stolen service weapon and apprehending those responsible.

No arrests had been made at the time of publication, and investigations are continuing.
