More Than a Number: The Sacrifice and Sweat Behind KZN’s Record Matric Pass Rate
The headline is historic: KwaZulu-Natal achieved a 90.6% matric pass rate in 2025, dethroning the Free State to become South Africa’s top-performing province. But behind that statistic lies a less-told storyone of extraordinary human sacrifice, sleeping bags in classrooms, and a province-wide pact between parents, pupils, and teachers that refused to let circumstance dictate destiny.
In a series of candid reflections, education stakeholders have pulled back the curtain on the relentless, ground-level effort that turned potential into passes. This wasn’t a miracle; it was a meticulously executed campaign fought in the most challenging of environments.
“Teachers Slept at Schools”: The Ultimate Commitment
Perhaps the most striking revelation came from Sakhile Mngadi of the Education Portfolio Committee. “In some schools, principals and teachers went as far as sleeping at schools during camps,” he revealed. This wasn’t a one-off; it was a deliberate strategy to ensure learners in revision camps were supported, supervised, and shielded from distractions, often in areas with limited transport and resources. “That level of dedication made a real difference,” Mngadi stated.
A Discipline Forged in Unity
The success was rooted in a triad of discipline. Emmanuel Duma, principal of Sibusisiwe Comprehensive Technical High Schoolwhich scored 100% for the third year runningpinpointed the formula: “Discipline shown by the parents, the teachers, and the pupils.” He described a culture of unwavering commitment: parents arriving punctually for meetings, teachers leading weekend and morning classes with enthusiasm, and leadership that led by example. “As a school principal, I cannot expect other teachers to be at school on Saturday while I am at home,” Duma said.
Triumph Over “Infrastructure Challenges and Limited Resources”
What makes the achievement profound, as noted by Education MEC Sipho Hlomuka, is its origin. “The quality comes from the ground… from schools facing infrastructure challenges,” he said. This is a success story authored not in well-resourced urban centres, but in rural and township schools where educators and learners “remained committed” despite constraints.
The results show tangible quality, not just quantity. Bachelor passes surged from 84,470 to 89,161, a key indicator of depth. The collaborative effort extended to teacher unions, whose members’ work in classrooms was hailed as indispensable by acting portfolio committee chair Hlengiwe Mavimbela.
KZN’s victory is a testament to what is possible when a community decides that education is a non-negotiable priority. It is a story of teachers who became guardians, principals who became camp leaders, and parents who became partners. The 90.6% is a trophy, but the real legacy is the proven blueprint: that with collective will and sacrifice, even the most daunting obstacles can be overcome. The province now faces a new challenge: not just to lead, but to sustain this hard-won culture of excellence into 2026 and beyond.
