A late-night patrol by a specialised police unit in KwaZulu-Natal has led to the arrest of a suspected cash-in-transit (CIT) robber, averting a potential heist. In a separate operation hours earlier, police in the province intercepted a major drug shipment, showcasing a dual-front clampdown on serious crime.

The CIT suspect was handcuffed just after midnight on Saturday, 31 January, in Inanda. Members of the Inanda Trio Task Team were patrolling near Ithendele Road and the M25 highway when their attention was drawn to a white VW Polo parked on the roadside. A search of the vehicle uncovered a backpack in the boot containing explosives and detonators, the classic tools of a CIT robbery.

Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed the arrest, stating the suspect is expected to appear in the Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Drug Bust Nets “Cocktail” of Narcotics

In a coordinated operation earlier on Saturday, the KZN Provincial Drugs and Firearm Unit, acting on credible intelligence, teamed up with private security to intercept a vehicle suspected of trafficking drugs between Madadeni and Osizweni.

After hours of surveillance, the targeted vehicle was stopped. A search revealed a bag containing a “cocktail” of drugs, including rock cocaine, mandrax, and crystal meth. A 33-year-old man and a 39-year-old woman were arrested on charges of possession and dealing in drugs. They are also due in the Madadeni Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

The back-to-back successes highlight the ongoing pressure on syndicates involved in high-stakes violent crime and narcotics trafficking in the province. The discovery of ready-to-use explosives indicates police may have disrupted a CIT robbery in its final planning stages, potentially preventing significant violence and loss. As the suspects face court, the operations serve as a reminder of the persistent threat of organised crimeand the units working to dismantle it.
