The 2026 Formula 1 season roared into life in Melbourne on Friday, and hometown hero Oscar Piastri wasted no time giving the crowd something to cheer about.

The McLaren driver topped the timesheets during the second practice session at the Australian Grand Prix, setting the pace under clear skies at Albert Park. Piastri finished the session just over two tenths of a second ahead of Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli, while George Russell placed third as he begins what many believe could be his first serious run at the world championship.

With sweeping new regulations reshaping the sport this year, the opening weekend in Australia has become the first real glimpse into how the teams stack up in Formula 1’s new era.

Piastri Thrills Home Crowd In Melbourne

For the fans packed around Albert Park, Piastri’s performance added an extra layer of excitement to the season opener.

The Melbourne-born driver clocked the fastest time of the session, showing that McLaren could be a genuine contender despite Mercedes arriving as the early favourites. With an estimated 500,000 spectators expected to attend across the race weekend, the local support behind Piastri is unmistakable.

The Australian was a major title contender for much of last season and spent more time leading the championship than any other driver. However, he ultimately finished third behind McLaren teammate Lando Norris and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.

Friday’s result suggests Piastri may once again play a major role in the title battle.

Russell Begins Championship Campaign

George Russell finished third in the second practice session, placing him just three tenths behind Piastri. The Mercedes driver ended the session only one thousandth of a second ahead of Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton, underlining just how tight the competition appears at the start of the new campaign.

Mercedes have entered the season widely tipped as the team to beat following the latest technical regulation changes. Russell has also emerged as the bookmakers’ favourite for the world championship, raising expectations ahead of Sunday’s race.

Despite that hype, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has played down suggestions that his team will dominate.

Wolff said the team will approach the season cautiously and focus on steady improvements rather than assuming early success.

Mixed Fortunes Across The Grid

Behind the leading trio, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc finished fifth after topping the earlier practice session. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen placed sixth after running through the gravel at Turn 10 late in the session while adjusting to the demands of the new regulations.

Reigning world champion Lando Norris endured a frustrating start to his title defence. A gearbox issue limited him to only seven laps during the opening practice session, and he eventually finished seventh, roughly a second off Piastri’s pace.

Further down the field, Aston Martin struggled significantly. Both Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll ended the session near the bottom of the standings, finishing 20th and 21st out of 22 drivers.

Their difficulties follow concerns raised earlier in the week by team principal Adrian Newey, who warned that a vibration issue with the car could potentially cause nerve damage to drivers if left unresolved.

Cadillac’s Sergio Pérez rounded out the field after failing to set a competitive lap time.

New Era Of Formula 1 Taking Shape

While Mercedes were widely expected to begin the season with an advantage, Piastri’s pace in Melbourne hints that the battle at the front could be far closer than predicted.

With Ferrari, Red Bull and McLaren all showing flashes of speed during practice, the 2026 championship is already shaping up to be highly competitive.

As teams continue gathering data ahead of qualifying and Sunday’s race, the opening weekend at Albert Park has already delivered a clear message.

Formula 1’s new era may be unpredictable and the title fight could be wide open.
