Nearly a month after one of the most controversial decisions in recent African football history, Patrice Motsepe has arrived in Dakar, stepping into a storm that shows no signs of calming down.

The Confederation of African Football president’s visit comes at a delicate moment, with tensions still running high following CAF’s decision to strip Senegal of their Africa Cup of Nations title and hand it to Morocco instead.

A Visit Amid Mounting Pressure

Motsepe confirmed his trip at the end of March, framing it as part of a broader effort to unite the continent’s football stakeholders. His itinerary includes stops in both Senegal and Morocco, with a clear message about collaboration and the future of African football.

In Dakar, he is expected to meet Bassirou Diomaye Faye at the presidential palace, followed by a press briefing that could shed more light on CAF’s next steps.

But beyond the formalities, the visit carries symbolic weight. It signals an attempt by CAF leadership to manage the fallout from a decision that has shaken confidence in the organisation.

The Decision That Sparked It All

The controversy stems from the AFCON final played on 18 January in Rabat, where Senegal initially secured a 1-0 victory over hosts Morocco.

That result, however, did not stand.

CAF later ruled that Senegal had breached regulations after players, head coach Pape Thiaw, and staff walked off the pitch in protest when Morocco were awarded a late penalty. Although Brahim Diaz missed the spot kick, the disciplinary outcome proved far more decisive than the moment itself.

On 17 March, CAF overturned the result and awarded Morocco a 3-0 victory, effectively handing them the title.

Senegal Pushes Back

The ruling has not gone unchallenged.

Senegal’s football authorities have taken the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, hoping to overturn what many in the country see as an unjust decision.

The backlash has extended beyond football structures. Senegal’s government has called for an international investigation, raising concerns about transparency and governance within CAF.

This level of political involvement highlights just how significant football remains across the continent, where national pride and sporting success are deeply intertwined.

What Happens Next

Motsepe has been careful not to influence the legal process, stating that CAF will respect whatever decision comes from CAS.

His stance reflects the tightrope CAF now walks. On one side lies the need to uphold its rules and authority. On the other, the growing demand for accountability and trust from member nations.

For South African football fans, the situation feels particularly close to home. Motsepe’s leadership is under scrutiny not just as CAF president, but as a prominent figure representing the continent on the global stage.

The coming weeks will be crucial. The CAS ruling will not only determine the official outcome of the AFCON final, but could also shape how CAF is perceived moving forward.

For now, all eyes are on Dakar, where football politics and continental pride have collided in a way that few could have predicted.
