City Power has announced a week of planned electricity interruptions across parts of Johannesburg from 17 to 24 August 2026 to carry out maintenance and strengthen ageing infrastructure ahead of winter demand.

Why the outages are happening

City Power said the programme is intended to service ageing equipment, identify and replace faulty components, and reduce the risk of unplanned outages. A spokesperson, Isaac Mangena, said the timing is important as the activities help protect the network during periods of increased demand.

“Planned maintenance is critical in ensuring that ageing infrastructure is serviced, faulty equipment is identified and replaced, and the risk of unplanned outages is reduced.”

“These activities also help protect the network during periods of increased demand, particularly during the winter season when colder weather places additional pressure on electricity infrastructure.”

Where and when outages are scheduled

City Power published details of scheduled interruptions at specific substations and switching stations. Some outages may last up to eight hours.

Planned interruptions include:

  • Bond Street Substation, Randburg: scheduled from 9am to 5pm on Monday 17 August, affecting Ferndale, Oak Street, Bordeaux, Bond Street, Kensington B, Frere Street, Sentraal (Sentrum) Road, Nestle House and First National Bank RMU00513. Further work was scheduled at the same substation from 9am to 5pm on Tuesday 18 August affecting Northgate, Northriding and surrounding areas.
  • Greenstone Hill Switching Station: set to be off from 9am to 5pm on Thursday 20 August, affecting Stone Close, Hereford Road, Stoneridge Drive and Emerald Boulevard.
  • Mayfair Substation (Hursthill service delivery centre): scheduled from 9am to 5pm on Friday 21 August, affecting Mayfair North, Amalgam Standby, Crown, Frederick Park and Amalgam.
  • Goldev Switching Station, Lenasia: scheduled from 8am to 4pm on Friday 21 August, affecting Neptune Road, Process Road, Galaxy Avenue, Mpumelelo Street, Telescope Road and Freedom Park/Siyaya.

The city also warned Midrand residents about a planned interruption in the week’s schedule.

Advice for residents

Mangena urged customers to take precautions during the interruptions and to remain cautious on electrical supply points.

“Customers are advised to treat all electrical supply points as live at all times during the interruption period, as power supply may be restored earlier than anticipated.”

“Customers are also encouraged to unplug appliances during the outage to avoid possible damage when electricity supply is restored.”

City Power asked customers to check its planned outages page and to register for SMS alerts for updates, and thanked residents for their patience and cooperation.

What to expect

The work is described as planned and preventive, aimed at improving reliability and reducing unplanned interruptions during the colder months. City Power acknowledged the inconvenience the interruptions may cause.
