There are malls, and then there are places that quietly become part of a city’s rhythm. Over the past decade, Mall of Africa has done exactly that.

What started as an ambitious retail space in 2016 has grown into something bigger. Today, it is not just where people shop. It is where Johannesburg meets itself. Where fashion, food, music and culture come together in one shared space.

Now, as the mall marks its 10th anniversary this April, it is leaning into that identity with a celebration that feels more like a cultural moment than a retail milestone.

A Decade Of Culture Comes To Life

Rather than simply marking the occasion with sales and signage, Mall of Africa is telling its story in a more creative way.

The centrepiece of the celebrations is a large-scale Thread Installation launching on 24 April. It is not just art for the sake of it. Each tenant will contribute coloured threads that represent their brand, weaving together a single, evolving piece.

The result is meant to reflect what the mall has become over the years. A shared ecosystem where different ideas, industries and people intersect.

It is a clever metaphor for modern retail in South Africa. Shopping centres are no longer just about transactions. They are about experience, identity and connection.

A Walk Through Time And Transformation

Alongside the installation, visitors will be able to explore an interactive timeline that traces the mall’s journey over the past ten years.

For many Joburg residents, that timeline mirrors their own memories. First dates, weekend outings, last-minute outfit hunts, family lunches. Spaces like this often become markers of everyday life.

The exhibit also highlights how retail itself has shifted. The rise of experiential shopping, curated environments and lifestyle-driven spaces has changed how people engage with malls across the country.

Mall of Africa has been at the centre of that shift, positioning itself as more than a place to buy things.

Win Big While You Explore

From 24 April to 1 May, shoppers can also take part in a competition linked to the installation, with a chance to win R10 000.

It adds a layer of interaction to the experience, encouraging visitors to engage with the artwork rather than simply pass by it.

A Grand Finale With Mi Casa

The celebrations will wrap up on 28 April with a live performance by Mi Casa at the Crystal Court.

Known for their smooth blend of house, jazz and soul, the group feels like a fitting choice. Their music has soundtracked countless South African moments over the years, much like the mall itself has played host to everyday memories.

The evening will also include curated goodie bags for 500 guests and exclusive merchandise drops, turning the finale into a full experience rather than just a performance.

More Than A Mall

Ten years in, Mall of Africa’s story reflects a broader shift in how South Africans experience public spaces.

In a city like Johannesburg, where community is often built in shared environments, places like this matter more than we sometimes realise. They become meeting points, cultural hubs and, over time, part of the city’s identity.

This anniversary is not just about looking back. It is about recognising how far retail spaces have come and where they are headed next.

And if the past decade is anything to go by, Mall of Africa is not slowing down anytime soon.
