Latest Hawks arrest adds to Tembisa Hospital R635m probe

A 37-year-old suspect has been arrested in connection with the Tembisa Hospital corruption investigation and is expected to appear in court on Monday, 31 August.

The Hawks arrested the suspect at OR Tambo International Airport on Friday, 28 August, as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged tender fraud linked to the hospital’s procurement process.

Investigation targets alleged procurement scheme

The Serious Corruption Investigation is examining allegations of fraud, corruption, forgery and/or uttering, contraventions of the Public Finance Management Act and money laundering.

According to the Hawks, some hospital officials allegedly colluded with service providers to exploit the Request for Quotations system for transactions below R500 000.

Investigators allege the system was used to avoid the formal tender process.

The latest arrest adds to a long-running investigation into alleged corruption at Tembisa Hospital, which has drawn attention to the use of public healthcare funds in Gauteng.

The Special Investigating Unit has previously investigated alleged procurement irregularities at the hospital. Its wider probe found evidence of significant financial losses involving companies and individuals linked to the hospital’s procurement processes.

The latest suspect is expected to appear before the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court sitting at the Palm Ridge Magistrates’ Court. He faces charges relating to fraud, corruption and money laundering.

The Hawks said the investigation remains focused on bringing those allegedly involved in the Tembisa Hospital saga to account.
