A quiet Tuesday morning in Bellville South took an unsettling turn when armed suspects targeted the home of alleged gang leader Jerome ‘Donkie’ Booysen, adding yet another layer of intrigue to a case already gripping the Western Cape.
The incident unfolded just after 11am in Glenhaven, where a domestic worker was alone on the property at the time. According to police, the woman was ambushed by unidentified men and tied up inside the house.
Fortunately, she was not physically harmed, but the brazen nature of the attack has raised concerns about safety in an area already familiar with gang-related tensions.
Western Cape police spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk confirmed that a house robbery case has been opened at Bellville South SAPS. Authorities are still trying to determine exactly what was taken during the break-in, with no arrests made so far.
Booysen himself was not present during the burglary, and investigators are continuing to piece together the details of what happened inside the property.
For many in Cape Town, the name “Donkie” Booysen is synonymous with the city’s long-running gang underworld narrative. The alleged Sexy Boys gang leader has been a central figure in high-profile cases that have dominated headlines for years.
The burglary comes at a time when Booysen is already under intense public scrutiny. He is currently standing trial in the Western Cape High Court, facing a wide range of serious charges.
Among them is the murder of Brian Wainstein, a well-known figure often referred to as the “steroid king”, who was shot dead in his Constantia home in 2017 while asleep beside his family.
The broader case stretches far beyond a single charge. The indictment includes 38 counts, ranging from murder and attempted murder to money laundering, corruption and offences under the Prevention of Organised Crime Act.
In recent months, the trial has taken an even darker turn, with co-accused Mark Lifman and Andre Naude both killed in separate shootings. Their deaths have only deepened the sense that this is not just a courtroom battle, but part of a much larger and more volatile underworld story.
Cape Town has long wrestled with the influence of organised crime, particularly across areas like the Cape Flats where gang dynamics often spill into everyday life. Incidents like this burglary, even when not directly linked to violence, reinforce just how complex and far-reaching these networks can be.
For residents, it is another reminder that crime in the city does not always follow predictable patterns. A targeted home invasion in broad daylight, involving a figure already at the centre of a major criminal trial, keeps the spotlight firmly on law enforcement and the justice system.
As police continue their investigation, the burglary becomes more than just a standalone incident. It is now part of a much bigger story that continues to unfold both in the courts and on the streets.
