12-year-old girl killed by stray bullet during Eid al‑Adha sacrifice in Free State
A 12-year-old girl was killed by a stray bullet during an Eid al‑Adha qurbani (day of sacrifice) event at Jibalus Salaam in Fouriesburg, Free State, on Thursday, 28 May 2026. According to a funeral notice the child was identified as Amatullah Bint Mohammed Ismail Mungur, originally from Mauritius.
Chaos after bull breaks loose
Ground Zero Search and Rescue said the incident began when a bull destined for sacrifice broke free from a waiting truck and charged through the crowd. The organisation said the animal sent attendees, including children, running in all directions.

In an attempt to stop the rampaging animal, shots were fired. A stray bullet reportedly struck the 12‑year‑old while she sat inside her family’s vehicle. Emergency responders attended the scene but the child succumbed to her injuries and was declared dead.
