Joburg According to The Citizen, Cartrack has pushed back against social media claims about the circumstances surrounding an employee’s death at its Rosebank offices and said it is supporting an investigation into the incident.

Company disputes posts alleging staff were barred from leaving

According to The Citizen, Cartrack rejected claims that the employee had been denied the opportunity to go home after reporting that she was unwell. The company said the timeline circulated online was incorrect and clarified that the incident occurred on Saturday, not Friday.

What Cartrack told The Citizen about the incident

According to The Citizen, Cartrack said the employee arrived at work at 8:00am on Saturday and by 9:00am had told her manager she was feeling ill. The manager escorted the employee to the bathroom, where the employee allegedly locked herself in a stall.

When there was no response, the manager notified facilities to open the door and activated on-site trained first responders, according to The Citizen. Cartrack said its responders were equipped with an automatic external defibrillator and that emergency medical services were called immediately.

Medical emergency and company response

According to The Citizen, Cartrack described the episode as a “sudden and unexpected” medical emergency while the employee was at work. The company reiterated that at no time was the deceased prevented from leaving the premises or from taking sick leave.

Support and privacy for the family

According to The Citizen, Cartrack said the employee had provided a sick note for leave taken on 1 June and had informed her manager of “sensitive, private, and personal challenges.” The company said those matters were handled with sensitivity and confidentiality.

Cartrack told The Citizen it was prioritising support for the family and counselling for employees affected by the loss, and that a police case had been opened.

According to The Citizen, Cartrack said it is supporting a “thorough investigation” and that, in line with its commitment to privacy, dignity and respect for the family, it will not be commenting further on the circumstances.

According to The Citizen, Cartrack said it will release its findings once its own investigation is complete.
