Man arrested in Sekhukhune after police seize 258kg of cannabis worth over R500,000
Police in Sekhukhune, Limpopo, arrested a 44-year-old man after seizing 258kg of cannabis packed in black plastic bags, estimated to have a street value of more than R500,000.
Stop following tip-off led to large seizure
According to police reports, members of the South African Police Service (Saps) received a tip-off and on Wednesday intercepted a silver grey Toyota Hilux bakkie at Steelbridge, Ga-Malekana village as it entered the Sekhukhune policing area.
Officers stopped and searched the fully loaded vehicle and discovered a large amount of cannabis packed in black plastic bags. The bags weighed 258 kg and were seized by Saps members during the arrest of the driver.
Arrest and court expected
The driver, described in police reports as a 44-year-old male, failed to provide a satisfactory response about the origin of the cannabis and was immediately arrested.
He was expected to appear before the Sekhukhune Magistrate’s Court on Thursday on a charge of possession of cannabis.
Related police activity elsewhere
The report also noted separate policing activity in the Western Cape this week where officers from Vanrhynsdorp recovered an illegal firearm during a raid and added charges against a 46-year-old male held in custody for attempted murder.
Police in Mitchells Plain responded to a complaint about a man with a firearm at a shopping mall; officers arrested a 22-year-old male after finding an unlicensed firearm that was later linked to a 2025 theft in Mtubatuba, KwaZulu-Natal.
What happens next
Police retained the seized cannabis and the arrested suspect was due to face the Sekhukhune Magistrate’s Court on the possession charge.
