Masakhane motorists have been warned after two vehicles were reported stolen from the owners’ homes in separate incidents, The Citizen reports.

What happened

According to The Citizen, the latest incident took place on 3 September when a man reported to police that his brother’s white Toyota Corolla, which had been parked outside with all doors and windows locked on the evening of 2 September, was missing when he checked in the early hours of the next day.

The Citizen also reports a separate theft on 31 August, when a man said his blue Nissan 1400, left parked in his yard with doors and windows secured, was gone by about 04:15 the next morning when he looked through a window preparing for work.

Police advice and investigation

According to The Citizen, police said the suspects in both incidents are not yet known and that investigations are ongoing.

Warrant Officer David Ratau advised motorists to lock their vehicles, remove all valuables and to park inside a secure garage or a well-lit driveway. He also recommended installing steering wheel locks, alarms, immobilisers or a tracking device to make vehicles harder to steal.

“We are not saying cars with steering locks don’t get stolen, but we have noticed that they are often safer than those with none,” Ratau said.
