Woman killed in Durban North shooting as delivery biker and child caught in the chaos

Police investigate deadly attack that left three people affected

A woman has died after a shooting in Durban North on Sunday evening, while a delivery biker and a child were also injured in the incident.

Emergency services rushed to Blackburn Road, near Park Road, shortly after 5:30pm, where they found a heavy police and private security presence and a road closed off as officers secured the crime scene.

Woman declared dead at the scene

According to ALS Paramedics, crews arrived to find a vehicle that had been riddled with bullets.

Inside the vehicle was a woman, believed to be in her 40s, who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

Despite the efforts of paramedics, she was declared dead at the scene after it was determined that her injuries were fatal.

The woman’s identity has not yet been released, pending the formal notification of her next of kin.

Delivery biker injured while passing the scene

A delivery biker was also injured during the incident.

According to ALS Paramedics, he was allegedly struck while riding past the area where the shooting occurred.

He managed to continue travelling a short distance before stopping further down Blackburn Road, where paramedics stabilised him before transporting him to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

The extent of his injuries has not been disclosed.

Child also taken to hospital

A child sustained minor injuries during the incident and was transported to hospital for medical care.

Authorities have not confirmed how the child was injured or whether the child was travelling in the targeted vehicle or was nearby when the shooting took place.

Police begin investigation

South African Police Service (SAPS) officers remained on the scene for several hours while investigators examined the area and gathered evidence.

Blackburn Road was temporarily closed to traffic to allow detectives and forensic teams to process the crime scene.

At this stage, police have not released details regarding a possible motive, whether any suspects have been identified or if arrests have been made.

Community concerns over public shootings

The incident has once again highlighted the dangers posed by shootings in busy public spaces, where innocent bystanders can become victims.

Delivery drivers, commuters and families frequently travel through Durban North’s road network, and incidents of this nature often have far-reaching effects beyond the intended target.

Police are expected to continue their investigation as they work to establish the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting and identify those responsible.
